Positive Behaviours for Learning (PBL)

At SFS, our school expectations are:

Respect

Responsibility and

Kindness

This week we have continued to focus on the expectation of RESPONSILBILITY in OUTDOOR SPACES and think before you act. However, this last week we have had a focus on using appropriate language when we deal with conflict in the yard. We have seen an increase in minor incidents of inappropriate language being used, including the use of name calling and swearing. We are trying to teach the students to express how they are feeling in a more appropriate way such as saying “That’s not fair. Let’s find a compromise”.

Your child may bring home an acknowledgement card if a teacher sees a child showing our key values of Respect, Responsibility and Kindness. We will particularly focus on our school expected behaviour for the week that is the focus of our PBL lesson. If your child brings home an acknowledgment card, have a chat about why your child has received the card and sign the card. The card then comes back to school and will go into a raffle box. Every Friday, one Junior and one Senior student’s name from each learning space will be drawn out. That child will get to choose from coming on Monday in casual clothes or they will get 15 minutes of free time on Monday afternoon.

SFS Twilight Community Market

We are excited to have our annual Twilight Community Market. This year it will be held on Thursday 9th November 2023. The market will run from 5 to 8pm. If you or someone you know has a small business you would like to promote, please complete one of the expression of interest forms that you will find in this week’s newsletter. You can also pick up a form and complete it at the front desk at the school office. The cost of a stall is just 20 dollars. Maybe you can come up with an idea with your family or something you can make and sell at the market. Put the date in your diary and tell your family and friends. Let’s make this year’s market the best one ever! I have already locked in a variety of stalls from toys, clothes, candles and plants and lots of yummy food trucks. If you are able to donate a prize or goods that we may be able to raffle that we be greatly appreciated too. Wellbeing Day with a focus on Child safety including Walk safely to school day

On Monday 5th June the whole school will be having a special wellbeing day with a focus on Child safety. This is crucial as Child safety is always at the forefront of all we do at SFS. The school must adhere to 11 Child safe standards that help create and maintain a child safe organisation and protect students from all forms of abuse. On this day, we have a theatre company called Brainstorming Productions who will be performing a play called “Zanna and the Lost Code”. The show is designed to spark conversations about bullying, cyber safety and resilience amongst our students. There will be a junior and senior performance of the show, tailored to meet the needs of the age group of the students. The teachers will look at the Child safe standards with the students in child friendly language. All activities for the day will have a focus on safety. We will also collect some data on the day about the student’s wellbeing to get a sense of how they are tracking and identify any wellbeing issues we may need to address.

We will also be having Walk safely to school day on this day. The annual campaign encourages all primary school children, their parents and carers to walk safely and regularly to school. The event seeks to promote road safety, health, public transport and the environment. The objectives of National Walk Safely to School Day are:

  • To encourage parents and carers to walk regularly with their children, all or part of the way to school.
  • To promote the health benefits of walking and create regular walking habits.
  • To help children develop vital road crossing skills and ensure children up to the age of 10 years hold an adult’s hand when crossing the road.
  • To reduce car dependency and traffic congestion, especially around schools.
  • To reduce the level of air pollution created by motor vehicles.
  • To promote the use of public transport.

At SFS we will celebrate this day on Monday 5th June. We encourage as many children as possible to walk to school or at least part of the way to school on this day. We will have 2 meeting points where we will have a walking school bus lead by some teachers. Parents can either drop their children off at this meeting point and walk to school with the staff or join the staff and walk to school with your children. When we arrive at school we will make our way to the school oval and do a lap of the oval. The two meeting points are:

  • The Lynbrook community centre
  • Figtree Reserve (corner of Alymer Rd and Waterbrush crescent)

We will meet at these two points at 8am and will be ready to leave by 8.10am.

Let’s get healthy together and walk to school!

If you have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please do not hesitate to contact me. rlenko@sfslynbrook.catholic.edu.au
