Play With Numbers
Numbers have been appearing everywhere at preschool. We have been counting objects and people, engaging with number rhymes; 5 Little Ducks, 5 Currant Buns, 10 Grey Elephants and 2 Little Dicky Birds.
The children practised making numbers by rolling a dice and forming the numerals with the number cards. The number cards were also used when they began writing the numerals themselves. We started with 1 digit numerals (1-9) and have progress to 2 digit numbers (10-20) and sometimes 3 digit numerals (100, 200 & 300).
Playing with, talking about and modelling numerals and patterns during the early childhood years helps build children’s understanding and confidence with foundation mathematical skills as they learn and grow. (EYLF V2 Outcome 5)
Where Do I Live?
The preschool children have been discussing where they live. Which city, country and planet. They engaged with research on the smartboard to look at the places that are familiar and not so familiar to them.
We established that we live in Sydney, which is in Australia (and we all now recognise the Australian and Aboriginal flags) and that we live on earth.
Together we looked at photos of icons within the city of Sydney; The Opera House, The Harbour Bridge, Anzac Bridge, Centre Point Tower, Luna Park and the Sydney ferries. We then drew our own pictures of these places. Some very talented artists continue to emerge.
We also worked in pairs to build our own bridges out of wooden blocks or cups and plates.
And.... here we are climbing the Harbour Bridge because in one of the photos we saw people climbing to the top where the Australian and Aboriginal flags fly.
With Miss Nguyen we watched a video of the Cabramatta markets on the smartboard and many children were able to identify familiar places they go to shop. We also saw the dragons dancing at the markets for Chinese New Year which many children were also familiar with.
Part of children's development of self identity is learning about where they belong, the familiar people and places within their life and being happy with who they are so they have the opportunities to become their own unique person within their community. (EYLF V2 Outcome 1)
