Wear it Purple Day

Celebrating and supporting our rainbow community

What did our principals, pups, pets, and NHS-peeps have in common last Friday 27th August? They were all sparkling a little bit brighter than usual, decked out in their purple-finest to celebrate Wear it Purple Day.

Each year we celebrate Wear it Purple (WIP) Day to foster a supportive, safe, empowering and inclusive environment for our rainbow students. The scale and impact of WIP Day is truly inspiring – founded in 2010 by a small group of LGBTQIA+ young people, it is now an international movement against bullying and harassment.

Normally, WIP Day at NHS would be a free-dress day like no-other. While we missed the sea of mauves, lilacs and magentas this year; we didn’t throw the celebrations out the window entirely. Our Connect classes had the opportunity to learn more about the history of WIP Day, could take the official WIP Quiz and contributed to our online celebrations.

In the spirit of this year’s WIP Day theme, which is Start the conversation… Keep it going, we can’t wait to keep the conversations (and celebrations) going when students return.

In the meantime check out our remote celebrations below, educate yourself on how to be a good trans ally, learn about LGBTQIA+ support services or relax with a good book from this list of LGBTQIA+ books for teens.
