SRC Report
Despite lockdowns, the SRC keeps working!
Although this term hasn’t been the most eventful, and has been weakened due to the reoccurring lockdowns, the SRC have been busy behind scenes, handling student-teacher relations and future events for the school. The SRC conducted a survey of students' beliefs about their relationships with staff. Upon reading the data collected, it was clear that there was room for improvement in certain areas, and this improvement wasn’t directly aimed at students.
At McClelland, we strive to make students feel as comfortable as possible with their learning and the classroom environment, and a great part of this comes from having a great educator. In order to combat many of the issues that arose from the survey results, we decided to host, now online, teacher focus groups. This event allows for us as representatives, and more importantly, as students, to voice both our thoughts towards teachers. The hope is that those who attend consider what has been said by students with great interest and try to focus on self-improvement for the future. This isn’t intended to be an attack on how teachers choose to handle their students, but more of an evaluation of how this happens and what could be done better for future reference.
In addition to this, we’ve also decided to host student focus groups. These are by no means compulsory, but are a great way of expressing or extending upon pre-existing views/thoughts students may have.
We are also hoping to host (or re-host) our Teacher the Teacher program on the 31 st of August. Similar to the teacher and student focus groups, the SRC are going to present quite a central issue that we’ve identified within the school and work with teachers to overcome said issue. The problem in question is going to be an extension upon improving student-teacher relations.
We’d like to remind students that the SRC is always open to receive thoughts and ideas you may have. Even if you aren’t a part of the SRC, you’re still a part of the school community and we value your thoughts as much as ours.
Unfortunately, due to the current circumstances that we’re facing both in school and state-wide, we’ve had to delay quite a few upcoming school events, the most notable being NAIDOC and Book Weeks. We apologize to any students and teachers who were planning and looking forward to participating in either of these, but they are expected to run some time next term instead. For those of you who aren’t aware of what both of these events are, I’ll just provide a brief summary of each below:
NAIDOC Week, with NAIDOC being an acronym for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee, aims to celebrate both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. The events hosted will both entice and educate our students, providing a look into the history of these people and their current social standing in Australia.
Book Week, as the name suggests, is about all things literature! Throughout the week, students can expect to see competitions on writing, guest speaking authors/writers, and the well-renowned dress-up day where students come as one of their favourite fictional characters from within the pages. As per usual, we expect to see as many students participate in these events and those who are best-dressed will be rewarded for their efforts.
