Ballarat High School has a diverse student population coming from all corners of the globe. Some of our students were born overseas while others still have strong connections to their heritage. These students contribute to our community through culture, tradition and languages that we can all learn from. English as an Additional Language (EAL) is recognition and celebration of these wonderful gifts.

When a student arrives in Australia their English language level is determined and support is given where required. This support continues for five years or until no longer needed. A student who has been in Australia longer than five years does not meet the EAL criteria. A student who has arrived from another country where instruction was in English may not qualify for EAL support either. At VCE level a student who has no more than seven years with English as their main language of instruction are entitled to undertake VCE English as an Additional Language. There are other conditions and criteria which may see other students become eligible.

In response to a survey our EAL students spoke about the number of languages they speak, at least two and sometimes up to four languages. Most students have lived in one other country, and some students had lived in three. When asked about differences between Australian schools and other schools they have attended overseas they had the following to say;

“different start times to the school day”

“no lockers so our books had to be carried to and from school”

“we don’t get to choose subjects everyone does the same subjects every day”

“more homework and longer school days”

“start school at an earlier age”.
