Student Excellence Program

At Lalor Secondary College we provide programs to extend and support our high-ability students to excel. This helps Lalor Secondary College cater to the educational needs of our brightest sparks and allow them to continue a lifelong love of learning.

“ The Lalor Secondary College Community can be confident in that we are providing the best opportunities to stretch and extend high-ability students.”

Since Term 1 of 2021, High Ability Students from Lalor Secondary College have been taking part in an educational extension program provided by the Victorian Government to reach full potential. These students have been a part of the Student Excellence Program initiated by the Minister for Education, James Merlino on behalf of the Department of Education and Training in Victoria.

Students from Lalor Secondary College who have shown an ability to achieve ‘high’ have been recognise by the Department of Education and Training, and are being included in the 48,000 students who are expected to take part in the extension program, named Victorian High Abilities Program, by 2022. The VHAP is being run by Virtual School Victoria who have organised Master Classes in Maths and English with students, with in their local area.

Staff at Lalor Secondary College have and can nominate high-ability students to participate in a range of free and high-quality extension activities according to their student’s abilities and interests through the  Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series.

Students from Lalor Secondary College have participated in webinars, virtual excursions, lectures and online tutorials. Master Classes have been delivered during school and other activities have been delivered during non-school hours with Parent Supervision.

The Victorian Government has partnered with more than twenty expert education and not-for-profit organisations, universities, tech schools, teacher associations, science and mathematics specialist centres to deliver the series.

Lalor Secondary College has a High Ability Practice Leader to coordinate the school’s participation in these programs and to support the high-ability students.

The Victorian High Ability Program and the Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series are key initiatives of the Victorian Government’s Student Excellence Program – which is equipping schools with the resources, tools and professional learning opportunities needed to support high-ability students.
