Literacy

This past fortnight we have continued to participate in our weekly Literature Circle activities based on our group novel. Despite learning from home, each group meets on a weekly basis to share the assigned role and chat about the book they are reading. It's so great to see all of the children in the group sharing, discussing and collaborating.

In writing we have recently begun writing our very own Choose Your own Adventure story based on Goldfields life. Last week we learnt about how different groups lived on the goldfields, the dangers they encountered, the challenges, the positives and negatives. We're really looking forward to reading and sharing our finished stories in the next week or so. Below are some of the drafted Sizzling Starters!

Maths

In Maths we have been focussing on location. This past week we learnt about the cartesian coordinate system and the alphanumeric grid system. Through a series of online activities we were able to apply what we were learning and get an understanding of how these grid systems work. This week we have begun a new unit on Money. We will apply what we know and what we learn to real life scenarios involving money. We will solve problems involving purchases and the calculation of change, create simple financial plans and investigate and calculate percentage discounts of 10%, 25% and 50% on sale items. Below are maps drawn by the children for our location unit.

Potato Olympics

It was great to see so many children take part in the Potato Olympic activities last Friday. It looked as though everyone had a great deal of fun creating their potato Olympians, decorating them and putting them through their paces in different events such as diving, running, skateboarding, soccer, high jump, sumo wrestling, rolling and spinning just to name a few! The photos and videos uploaded were so creative. Over the coming weeks we will have other wellbeing days to help break up our routine and inject an extra bit if fun in our day. Our next wellbeing day will be tomorrow! The children will learn more about it at their 9:15am morning meet.

Sovereign Hill Camp

As you are all aware we have had to cancel our upcoming Year 5/6 Camp to Sovereign Hill. The governments decision to enforce further lockdown restrictions means our camp can no longer go ahead.  The possibility of being able to reschedule our camp there for this year is very unlikely as Sovereign Hill do have lots of schools booked in for Term 4. We are endeavouring to look at some alternative options which may include a day trip to Sovereign Hill or an alternative camp elsewhere.

Stay home, stay safe!
