Companions On The Journey

‘A person’s experience, their story, is sacred ground.’

Best wishes to all members of our community for the new term. I particularly welcome students, families and staff members joining our College for the first time. At our staff conference this week we introduced new staff and acknowledged the return of others from periods of leave:

  • Ms Carly Moore – Mary Ward Primary
  • Mrs Vicky Murphy – Year 4 (Long service replacement)
  • Mrs Tania Papalia – Year 7 (Long service replacement)
  • Ms Lumley, Mr Gleghorn and Mr Williams from long service leave.
  • Ms Eva-Maria Catina (College Psychologist) from parental leave.

Under the guidance of Fr Chris Gleeson SJ, the theme of our conference focussed on the great stories of our College with specific reference to our three Charisms of Pope John XXIII, Ignatius of Loyola and Mary Ward. It was very much a John XXIII College story as we also leant on the wisdom of our current staff and the telling of stories from their experiences at the College.

It was a great opportunity for all of us to learn more of the early days at John XXIII College and the wonderful legacy we have inherited from Loreto and St Louis. We received a lovely recorded message from our first Principal, Fr Daven Day SJ (1977- 1978), advising of the initial conversations beginning in 1970 considering the possibilities for amalgamation. Fr Daven explained that it was not until 1976 when the then Director of Catholic Education Dr Peter Tannock intervened that the discussions started to move towards fruition.

Some of our current staff are former students of our College and many of our parents have also had an earlier engagement through their own schooling days. There is much wisdom we can glean from families who have had a previous association with the College.

We look forward to sharing more reflections as our 40 year celebrations continue into the second semester.

Pilgrims Prepare

This week we were reminded by Fr Chris to step out of our comfort zones, to see the world from the outer margins and to act with great tenderness and compassion.

While this is a call for all of us, it is great to see our Pilgrimage students engaging in fundraising initiatives, set up to support the communities they will be visiting this September.

The John XXIII community has always given generously to support those in great need.  You can help by supporting the Pilgrimage students' movie night or quiz night initiatives outlined in this newsletter.

Together, let us seek justice.

Yours sincerely

This initiative is aimed at getting more students travelling independently, helping busy parents, improving sustainability and reducing car traffic.  We are looking at other routes to trial further new bus services in the future.
