Mock Trials

Round 3 of the 2019 Law Society of Western Australia Mock Trial Competition was held on Monday night at the Supreme Court. Our team went up against Rossmoyne Senior High School - appearing for the Defendant in a civil case claiming damages after a defamatory Facebook post. The team persuasively argued that the defendant was justified in publishing the Facebook post consisting of text and a picture of the plaintiff.

The Judge commended the witnesses on their fastidious recollection and the barristers for their superb line of questioning and quick objections.

There is a lot of preparation involved in the lead up to trial, but coming off exams, we had only a week to prepare for this case. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the students who, despite their busy schedules, diligently attended lunchtime and after school meetings. I would also like to thank the other members of our team who came along on the night to offer support.

Our Round 3 Team included:

  • Barrister 1: Charlie Richards
  • Barrister 2: Rory Hewson
  • Solicitor: Sam Falzun
  • Witness 1: Liam Hurley
  • Witness 2:  Reuben Patchett
  • Judges Associate:  Cullen Binet
  • Reserve: James Langton & Alex Panther.

Congratulations to our 2019 Mock Trial team on another win (three for three) – and best wishes for the next round. In omnia paratus.

Building a wall of welcome during Refugee Week

The number of people fleeing war, persecution and conflict has risen to a 70 year high with close to 71 million people being displaced from their homes.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Global Trends report, shows that roughly 37,000 people were forced to leave their homes every day last year because of war.

Around half the world’s refuges today are children and of those almost 140,000 were unaccompanied or separated last year, which means that they are either travelling alone or without a parent or adult family member and that makes them highly vulnerable.

Reconciling God,

we pray for the day when all Australians stand together

recognising that we are called as one people to compassion and justice.

You call us to stand in solidarity with those who are most vulnerable,

especially refugees and asylum seekers who risk all

to find protection and a secure future for their families.

In this Refugee Week, open our hearts

so that Australia is kind and welcoming

to those who have journeyed to find a safe place to call home.

Hear our prayer offered in the name of your son, Jesus,

who was himself a refugee.

Year 7 retreat

This week the Year 7 students participated in their retreat experience. The theme of the retreat this year was experience God in our communities. Through an energetic and engaging series of games, talks and opportunities to share in small group discussions the students explored both faith and life. They thought about how the love we find in our families and the friendships we develop at school are reflections of the love that comes from God. They were reminded that this is also the foundation of our membership of the Church, that we are all known and loved by God and each other. The day ended with a wonderful Mass celebrated by Fr Rodrigo.

A huge thank you goes out to the 24/7 Youth Ministry Team who so ably facilitated the day, to Fr Rodrigo for joining us and especially to the students themselves who entered into the day with a positive and engaged attitude.

Here are some quotes  from the students:

"The Year 7 retreat day 2019 enabled us to bond with our friends and other students we may not have met before. This retreat day taught us how to bond with God and let us understand different communities and what relationships we build within them."

"The Year 7 Retreat Day was an amazing experience because it taught me a lot about trust and teamwork. I learnt about God and how he created love."

"Our retreat day was a fun and exiting way to connect with God and learn about all the different communities we are a part of; our family, school and parish communities. The way we learned about these aspects were through entertaining activities with friends in our cohort."

"I would say it was very good bonding experience, to become closer to God and all our Year 7 friends. I would highly recommend it to other kids of our age."

"It was a good way to connect with God and have a think about life."

Year 11 Dinner Dance

Last Friday night the Year 11’s had their Dinner Dance at the Bendat Basketball Centre. It was fantastic to see the students dressed up for the occasion and celebrating together post exams. The dinner plates had barely been cleared when the dance floor became packed, and stayed that way for the remainder of the night.

Special thanks to Jeff Jansen and his team for doing an amazing job of glitzing the venue up in the Great Gatsby theme; Sam Tout for photography; and all of the staff that joined us on the evening to celebrate with the students.

Year 8 Guest Speaker- Paul Litherland

Paul Litherland from Surf Online Safe was welcomed back to the College speaking to the Year 8 students on Thursday 20 June during their year assembly. With a wealth of experience having worked as a WA Police Officer for 20 years, including within the Technology Crime Investigation Unit, he spoke about the damaging nature of Cyber Bullying and the new Intimate Image Abuse legislation. A number of engaging, real life stories and examples were shared throughout the presentation, as well as offering advice and solutions. Paul hopes to make the online world safer by sharing these stories with students and making a difference in their lives.
