Stephanie Alexander Kitchen

Sonia Nista - Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Specialist

I recently attended the River Graze Food and Wine festival where I had the pleasure of meeting Stephanie Alexander herself! This was an absolute thrill for me having been involved with the foundation for over 2 years now. She is still just as passionate about delivering positive food habits to children and was thrilled to hear all about the work we do here at Kingswood! Our students really are so lucky to be able to enjoy and experience this wonderful program.

It’s now hard to believe we have already reached week 10, this term has just flown past us!

I think the students have adjusted nicely to this year’s theme, celebrating fruit and vegetables, as there is a lot of discussion at each kitchen session. We've talked about zucchini, eggplant and now potatoes. One of our Year 3 students even pointed out that potatoes originated from Peru, so I am learning new things too! It’s great to spark up a discussion about fresh produce and have our students interested and contributing to something so life-worthy and important to their good health!

Over the past 3 weeks we have been working on our potato menu with Years 5 and 6, where they created delicious creamy potato salad, mini bacon and corn frittatas, a Salad of the imagination and apricot bites to finish off. Year 3 students made a savoury cheese and herb muffin and a seasonal garden salad. This menu has been created specifically for our Year 3 beginners for their very first cooking sessions.

While Liz prepares our garden in anticipation of a beautiful winter harvest, we will begin Term Two with a pasta menu where we will take a closer look at herbs and the roles that they play in our dishes. I know the students will absolutely love this!
