Mini Vinnie's Update
A huge thank you to a small group of Vinnies, who generously gave up their Friday night (two weeks ago) to help St Justin’s Primary School with their Winter Sleep Out. These students organised a number of ice breaker activities with the Grade 5 & 6’s, who just loved having the older students present at their first ever Sleep Out. The school was very appreciative of their efforts.

Christmas Appeal
A reminder that our final fund raising activity for 2107 is to ‘make a child smile’. Each Pastoral group has been allocated a particular child for whom they are raising money to purchase a Christmas gift. The aim is for each Pastoral Group to raise approximately $30, which equates to $2 per student. This is less that the cost of a cup of coffee. We encourage all students to donate generously, to make a difference to a child this Christmas.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has contributed to our fund raising activities throughout the year.
Regards,
The Mini Vinnie’s Team.

Award-winning Nazareth student films!
Nazareth College is very proud to have had 3 student films in the top 17 for the regional finals of the International Youth Silent Film Festival - more than any other Victorian school. The awards ceremony on Friday 27 October was a wonderful gala event attended by Mr Broadbent, Ms Gurm, the student directors, actors and many of the family members. Congratulations to Ronan Lobo & Daniel White for their award-winning 'Silence!’. Friday's successful awards ceremony means that our young directors are off to the World Finals in Portland, Oregon (USA) in 2018!
Our congratulations also go to Julia Proctor for 'Double Trouble’ and to Alyssa Mastromanno for ‘Notes’ and to the actors, family and friends who supported them, with particular thanks to Media teacher and mentor Mrs Venturini.

STEaM for Girls
Ashleigh Clements had the opportunity to attend a 5 day program called FULL STEaM AHEAD organised by Akorn Educational Services. It ws held at Engineers Australia in the city.
In Asheligh's words "It was very fun. We spent the day getting to know what disabilities are and the difficulties people face doing everyday tasks. We also built (using laser cut models) disabled toilets for places with low services like India. It was a really fun day and I can't wait for the rest of the week. "

Grade 4 Taster Day
It was a huge success as usual. We could not have done this without Ms Nogueira and Mrs Pennant's diligence and hard work in setting up all the activities. 'Make the Reindeer's nose glow' was a particularly fun activity.
I also thank Ms Arora, Mrs Dekker, Mrs Ferns, Mrs Murtagh, Mrs Murphy and Mrs Pellegrino in conducting the activities over a period of 3 days.
A huge thank you to the following Yr 8 girls who helped us out during the Taster Days. They were conscientious in not missing out on tests or assignments :)
Stephanie Allen, Agatha Scandizzo, Charlize Seabrook, Jordyn Pikolous, Kiyana Chembiah-Cafun and Monica Millo. Well done girls!

Digital Technologies Conference
On Friday Mr Holten and I attended the Digital Technologies Conference at the Catholic Leadership Centre in the city. It was a treat to see and hear what Dr Jordan Nguyen has achieved in such a short period of time. I also had the opportunity to try the virtual reality glasses and see dinosaurs wandering in nature a million years ago. It was an absolute treat!

Science Talent Search Awards Presentation.
On Monday October 23, ten students from Nazareth College attended the Science Talent Search Awards Presentation at La Trobe University in Bundoora. There, the students were able to look at entries from all over the state and gain ideas for the future Science Talent Search competitions. The entries included board games, computer programming, inventions, photography, working models and posters.
Five of the students received awards for the work they submitted.
Angela Cremona and Cathy Shi from Year 8 won a Major Bursary (Top Prize) for their experimental research titled “Does temperature of water affect plant growth?” This research was submitted into the prestigious National BHP Billiton Foundation Science and Engineering Awards for 2018.
Shayan Aliaga, Alyssa Mastromanno and Julia Proctor from Year 9 received a Minor Bursary (Second Place) for their creative writing pieces, “The Second Earth – Our Future”.
Congratulations girls on your wonderful achievement.

Science Teacher
“STS Awards Presentation was very busy and interesting. It was abundant with amazing Science experiments and games. The games were very creative and interesting. Many were used for learning. One of my favourites was a game on the immune system, with the aim to get the bacteria out! There were many posters that were very detailed and correlated to the theme of sustainability. It was an excellent experience and I would love to attend again” - Jenny Pham
“It was a wonderful opportunity visiting La Trobe University. There were many outstanding works of other students from schools throughout Victoria displayed within a huge hall. These works included; posters, games, models, investigations, creative writing and even photography! I believe that these unique ideas of creative students will inspire and help many other students in the next year, who also want to enter the Science Talent Search. It’s a really worthy thing to get involved in, especially if you love Science!” - Cathy Shi
“Going to La Trobe University was quite an exciting experience. We were able to observe many other students’ projects; from research investigations to creative writing pieces. The diverse range of projects was quite amazing to see. It was rather inspiring to see all the creative ideas people came up with, and how they managed to link things such as creative writing with Science, proving that Science is truly interlocked with many different subjects.
Early on in the year, we submitted our research investigation to Science Talent Search, and a few weeks ago, we learnt that we had been shortlisted for the BHP Billiton Competition. This was very surprising news for us, however we were overjoyed to be given this opportunity. It all sunk in as we reached La Trobe University. As we admired all the amazing projects produced by other students, we were captivated by the outstanding talent, and made to wonder, ‘How could our project ever be amongst all these remarkable products?’ Nevertheless, we were going to be awarded a Major Bursary, and so we had to attend a presentation. Walking up on stage to receive our medals, reminded us that all our time and effort wasn’t for nothing, and that if you work hard, you really can achieve anything. We encourage all of you to enter this competition, even if you may not feel too confident, as when we first entered, we had no idea what we were doing, but now we have been shortlisted for a national competition.” - Angela Cremona
“The Science Talent Search Presentation Day was a very fun experience. Seeing all the different entries was very interesting and it was mind blowing to think that some of these high standard pieces of work were created by primary school children. Overall it was a really good day. “ - Alyssa Mastromanno
