Year 5 Report

Speak With Power 2017

By Agnes and Lucy

On the 15th of November the Year 5’s had their final Speak With Power Session. We got up in front of the whole Grade 5, parents and teachers to talk about free topic choice. Over the past few weeks we had been having sessions with Ron Thomas, focusing on build on our public speaking skills. Some of the skills we learnt were use dot points and palm sized cards, we also learnt that we didn’t need to shout but project our voices and use a particular format (intro, highlights, lowlights, benefits and conclusion).

In the first week we had to make up a one-minute speech on the spot, the next week right a two minute speech following the format, then right a three minute speech once again following the format and the final week we were to present it in front of all the parents and any who wished to come.

Speak with Power has given us jobs as well, such as, Master Of Ceremonies, Listening Monitor,  Static Monitor, Timers, Golden Moments Recorder, General Evaluator and Evaluating our peers.

Job Roles

  • MC - has to conduct meeting and introduce.
  • LM - Make questions from speeches prizes for correct answers.
  • SM - Record the ums, errs and likes in speeches.
  • Timers - Time speeches and use signs to mark the time.
  • GMR - Mark the best moments of each speech.
  • GE - Evaluates everyone with a job.
  • Evaluators - Say good and bad things about their peers speech.

It was a brilliant experience for all of us and we will never forget it. And quote to prove that we should push ourselves.

“A book may give you excellent suggestions on how best to conduct yourself in the water, but sooner or later you must get wet …”   Dale Carnegie

Peer Mediation

By Luke Cannard and Jett Hyland

For the last 3 weeks Year 5 have been Peer Mediation during lunch time play.

What is peer mediation?

Peer mediation is where two students, in our case two Year 5’s, help if students are having an argument or disagreement on the yard. There are 6 steps to help solve the problem.

Step #1: Agree to mediation, make introductions and state ground rules

Step #2: Gather information, ask each person to explain what happened and ask each person whether he or she wants to add anything

Step #3: Focus on common interests and determine and summarize shared interests Step #4: Create options, brainstorm solutions and ask people what can be done to resolve the problem

Step #5: Evaluate the options and ask each person what could be done to resolve the problem

Step #6: Write up an agreement and have people sign it and shake hands, we have enjoyed what we have done so far and are excited to continue into 2018.
