PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
ATHLETICS
Despite it being the coldest August day in 47 years, the McKinnon Athletics Carnival went ahead full steam at Duncan Mackinnon Reserve. Students participated with enthusiasm, dedication and good cheer. Staff team-work ensured the day was a great success.
I would like to acknowledge the tremendous efforts of the organiser, Ms Alice Carter, who ensured the day ran like clockwork.
Thank you also to the student House Captains for their assistance, to Mr Hemsley and the Interact Club for putting on a very successful sausage sizzle, and the parents who attended, assisted with the events and took lots of photos.
It was indeed a bright ‘fluorescent’ day and one that reflected our value of Community.
Congratulations to Monash for their win!
WINTER CONCERT
Our annual Winter Concert is to be held at the Robert Blackwood Hall on Wednesday 30 August. Rehearsals are well and truly underway. This is always an impressive occasion and a highlight on the school calendar!
I encourage parents, grandparents and friends to attend and celebrate together the showcase of musical talent of our students. Tickets are on sale via the link on the McKinnon Secondary College website: www.mckinnonsc.vic.edu.au
I thank the music team for their efforts and look forward to a very successful event.
INFORMATION SESSIONS
Numerous information sessions have been conducted to assist students in Years 9, 10 & 11 to navigate their way in selecting their subjects for 2018. All these information sessions have been very well attended and I recognise and applaud the strong partnership that exists between parents and teachers at McKinnon to bring about the best outcomes for the students.
Many staff have given their time to help give relevant advice and information about subjects on offer.
I thank all involved and wish students all the best with their selections.
40 YEARS OF SERVICE
Ceremonies were held in July for Victorian educators for their years of service to education. Mrs Susan Wilken (Head of Health/Community Liason) and Mrs Inge Heffernan have both achieved a significant milestone and were recognised for 40 years of service to education. I congratulate both Mrs Wilken and Mrs Heffernan for their exceptional contribution to education in the State of Victoria but more importantly their significant contribution to the McKinnon Secondary College Community.
VOLLEYBALL PROGRAM
You will read impressive results about Volleyball at McKinnon in the Sports Section of this newsletter, but I wanted to comment on this program.
I often receive feedback from parents and emails thanking staff for their endeavours but I have never received as many emails of acknowledgement and thanks as I did about the difference the Volleyball program has made to many children.
Every successful program has a team of dedicated people at the centre. This program has grown significantly over the years and it is obviously much more than just about Volleyball. The dedication, commitment and passion from all involved is exceptional.
Congratulations to all the staff, students and ex-students who dedicate so much time and energy to be involved. I thank the parents for their support and especially thank those who put comments together in the many emails I received.
One particular person I would like to thank and acknowledge who goes above and beyond to make this opportunity possible and successful for all involved and who has taken Volleyball to the next level is Phil De Salvo! We really couldn’t do it without him!!
