Grades 3 and 4

What we are learning about

In Reading, we are learning about predicting what will happen next in a text, questioning to help with our comprehension of what we read and different types of poems.

 

In Writing, we are learning how to write a procedure. Looking at the structure, vocabulary used to write the steps and diagrams. We will also be revisiting narratives focusing on using descriptive bubbles to add more detail to our stories. 

 

In Maths, we are learning about division and the different strategies we can use to show our working out. 

 

In Inquiry, we will be learning about music and what effect it has on our lives. Students will be exploring different music genres, creating their own music and creating different genres.

Grades 5 and 6

What we are learning about

Reading—figurative language including hyperbole, similes, metaphors, idioms and personification, fluency and phrasing including the use of punctuation, expression and reading rates.

 

Writing—poetry, narratives and information reports including procedures and explanations, spelling focus on base words and word families using prefixes and suffixes, letter blends.

 

Maths—location and mapping including grid reference and the Cartesian Plane, understanding fractions and decimals to add and subtract and solve problems,  time elapsed, time zones and time tables.

 

Inquiry— developing a better understanding of music, and how it has influenced people and changed over time , investigating cultures, traditions and popular songs through the decades.

Welcome to our Robots!

Grades 5 and 6 have some new additions to support their learning; 10 coding robots! Students have been learning about coding, uses for this technology and its impact on our lives. We look forward to showcasing them on our Facebook page and at future Learning Expos.

How you can help at home

Provide a quiet time to practise reading independently.

Listen to students read aloud.

Provide opportunity to read poems, plays and scripts where possible.

Discuss the meaning of figurative language such as similes, metaphors, personification etc.

Discuss analogue time and provide support in reading analogue clocks.

Calculate the duration of events when given the start and end time.

Order decimal numbers up to 3 places.
