Allergies & Anaphylaxis

We have a responsibility to everyone in our St Brigid’s school community. The key to managing severe allergy is awareness, avoidance and action. Anaphylaxis is a severe and potentially life threatening allergic reaction. We want to do our best to keep those at risk, as safe as possible. Being allergy aware means being informed about allergies and their triggers. We aim to create a greater understanding of severe allergy and the risk of anaphylaxis within our school. Avoidance of the food trigger is the only way to prevent a reaction. It is critical that we implement strategies to prevent allergic reactions and that we are able to recognise an allergic emergency and act when it occurs. In the coming week students will be viewing and discussing an allergy awareness slideshow produced in conjunction with ASCIA and Allergy Awareness Australia.  Keeping the school informed of your child/rens current allergies and management plan helps staff remain informed, do their best and address the needs of students at risk. As a member of St Brigid’s school community we ask everyone to support us in undertaking the following actions;

Always eat food that mum/dad/carer has packed from home.

Do not accept food from your peers.

Always have children in the care of people who know they have an allergy, can recognise signs of a reaction and know how to use the adrenaline/epinephrine autoinjector (EpiPen®) in an emergency.

Always have the adrenaline/epinephrine autoinjector easily accessible.

Have an individualised Action Plan for Anaphylaxis with the emergency medication.

Minimise the allergen where possible i.e. ask parents not to send peanut butter or egg sandwiches.

Have children eat in a designated area.

Request that parents provide special ‘safe’ treats for your child.

Educate all staff on anaphylaxis and the special needs of particular children.

Make sure staff have had specific Anaphylaxis Training.

Educate other children on allergy issues.
