Student Representative Council Report

Last Thursday the SRC Senior Leadership Team participated in a workshop with Sue and Vernon Crew from our School Advisory Council. The workshop was designed to give our Representatives the basics of how we can have an effective SRC. We learnt about the skills needed to be an ‘active partner’ in the SRC and the basics of Governance and Advisory. Collaboratively participating in 2 activities we were able to develop our Terms of Reference including the purpose of the SRC, and the principles of the SRC. This process was interesting and rewarding because we needed to reflect on why we had put our hands up to be a student representative and how we wanted to be seen and valued in the O’Connor learning community. As a team, we identified that credibility and commitment were essential in order to be the change agents we want. We presented these Terms of Reference in our whole SRC meeting this week and consulted with the representatives from all years as to the worthiness of our purpose and principles. We also discussed moving into the process of electing membership roles in the SRC.

Another workshop will be held in the next few weeks where our Year 11 and 12 representatives will put these new skills into practice. We will participate in a practice meeting with Sue and Vernon guiding us and giving tips and tricks on how to hold an effective formal meeting. This will help make future meetings with the whole SRC effective and develop life-long critical leadership skills.

There are some exciting things ahead not only for our SRC representatives but the whole student body, a chance for everyone's voice to be heard and valued and a chance for everyone to make a difference in our school.
