Marriage and Family Sunday

Last week across the diocese was Marriage and Family Sunday. This was the climax of a week of prayer for marriage and families at O'Connor and lessons devoted to this topic in Religious Education. The theme for 2020 was Family - Passing on the Faith. Below is an extract from a link in the last Parish Bulletin. It  is part of a series of handouts on Nurturing Faith in Families published by the Diocese of Broken Bay and adapted from publications of the USCCB and other sources.

Parents often are unaware that from the moment of birth their children learn about God and experience God’s love through ordinary, everyday expressions of care and nurturing. In the home, faith is integrated and nurtured in the ebb and flow of daily life. Parents have the great privilege of being ‘God’s love with skin on’ for their children. The way parents love and relate to their children, day in and day out, in good times and bad, is the most powerful influence on their spiritual formation. Sometimes it is useful to take stock, and perhaps make resolutions to improve or renew the faith life of our families. It could be a simple custom rediscovered, such as saying Grace before meals, or placing a crucifix or other sacred image in the house or it may mean attending Mass more often. For a Christian parent, the calling to pass on faith may initially seem very daunting but in reality it is very much a part of ordinary daily life. This series of handouts is designed to support you in your family faith practices.

 National Vocations Awareness Week

August 2 to August 9 is National Vocations Awareness Week. We give thanks for the clergy and religious who devote their lives to the service of God. We pray for those who hear God's call into this vocation.

 Prayer for Vocations

O loving and gracious God, Father of all, you bless your people in every time and season and provide for their needs through your providential care. Your Church is continuously in need of priests, sisters and brothers to offer themselves in the service of the Gospel by lives of dedicated love. Open the hearts of your sons and daughters to listen to your call in their lives. Give them the gift of understanding to discern your invitation to serve you and your Church. Give them the gift of courage to follow your call. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Redeemer.

Amen.

Brothers, What Must We Do?

The Cathedral Parish is running an initiative to inspire men as true disciples of Christ. Below is an extract from the flyer that has appeared in the Parish Bulletin over the last couple of weeks.

As an initiative of the Australian Catholic Bishops, the aim of the ACBC National Men’s Gathering is to inspire and encourage men with a vision for personal discipleship, service and mission in the family, parish/diocese and the world. Our Parish is inviting men to come together on Saturday 15th August to be part of this virtual conference event for 2020. The structure of the day includes Mass, pre recorded talks from experienced presenters, and time for fellowship and food. Please register for our Parish group to: Fr Paul Chandler - frpchandler@armidale.catholic.org.au
