BOOK OF THE MONTH - AUGUST 2020

Finding Francois

   by

  Gus Gordon

This is a beautiful and heart- warming story about the value of friendship.

Alice lives in Paris, France. The illustrations show a city that looks very French.

Alice is in search of a friend. She wishes she had someone to talk to. She has a plan for how to find her new friend. Then one day, her wishes come true. Alice finds Francois!

Their to do lists are long; eating crème brulee, reading books, writing, drawing, dancing and more. They share love and laughter. This is a story about two friends who need each other and find each other.

Finding Francois, is a "feel-good" story with beautiful pastel art work. Not only do the illustrations show a city that looks very French, but there are many new words.

Can you find, read and understand French?

Book Reviews

Jackson R

Year 6

Frank, Anne

The diary of Anne Frank

This was quite easy to read and the translation was done really well. It was interesting to learn about Anne's experiences and I learned about how families like hers were affected by the Holocaust. It was very sad to learn about what happened to the families in the end.

Sophia P

Year 4

Siberry, Lisa.

The brilliant ideas of Lily Green

I was curious to find out what would happen when the beauty products that lily made were used. She shouldn't have stolen from her neighbor's garden but overall it was a very good book.

Ziegler, Maddie.

The competition -Maddie Ziegler

I absolutely loved this book. It was so funny and I liked how everything was going well. It was a great book about their dance competition in NYC and their adventures in NYC.

Year 5

DanTDM

Trayaurus and the enchanted crystal

This book is really good! It has action, humor, and adventure all the way through. I recommend it to fantasy fans! The drawings are REALLY nice! The only flaw is the moral. It doesn’t really have a proper moral, but nevertheless it is an amazing book.

Dear Mrs Farfalla,

Thanks for the new books. They are really amazing and I can’t stop reading them. The books I like best are; Edie’s Experiments How To Make New Friends, The List of Things That Will Not Change, Dog Tales and Middle School G’Day America. I liked these books because they had drama and exhilarating thrills.

I liked, Edie’s Experiments How To Make Friends by Charlotte Barkla because I can relate to it, finding it hard to make friends when  starting school. I think this is a good book for students in year 2 to year 6.

The List Of Things That Will Not Change by Rebecca Stead was the best book out of them all because of how long and interesting it was. It was about a girl who worries about what doesn’t concern her and gets teased about her dad being gay.

I would like more books like these.

Thanks,

Imogen

READING TOGETHER

Reading together with

your child is a VALUABLE thing to do.

Reading increases your child’s vocabulary.

Reading expands your child’s understanding.

Reading develops confidence.

Here are some tips to guide you:

  • Create a story time session together. Share the joy of reading with your child.
  • Encourage your child to choose books according to their interests.
  • Set aside a time of the day for reading EVERY DAY.
  • Share the book so your child can see the words and pictures.
  • Wordless picture books are great too. They help create imagination, ideas and discussion.
  • Rhyming and repetition books stimulate the love of language.
  • Read to your child using expression. Create the character using your voice.
  • This will make reading FUN for your child.
  • Point out features of the book.
  • Explore words using a dictionary or Google.
  • Encourage your child to share the reading.
  • Fluency is gained with confidence.
  • Model a good reading pace.
  • Re-read books for understanding, fluency and confidence.
  • Read together in upper primary years too. A picture story book is great for big kids too.
  • Encourage your child to read other books from their favourite author.
  • Encourage your child to read about their favourite author and illustrator.
  • Read different types of genres, texts and non-fiction books too.
  • Read a recipe, a poem, music lyrics, a magazine or newspaper article, plays, history books, science-fiction and sport related books.
