Reading During Home Learning

From Principal Steve Meade

Dear Parents and Carers,

Accessing Reading Material During Home Learning

During home learning 2.0 we strongly encourage all children to continue reading every day. We have the following digital platforms available for students to access reading material. We also encourage children to read books that they have at home, as nothing replaces the experience of reading a physical book!

PM eCollection

Students in Prep-2 will now have access to the digital platform PM eCollection. This collection of ebooks is similar to the books they usually take home or use in class for guided reading. Teachers will be sending out login details to access this platform soon and these instructions will help you to access your child’s account.

Storybox

This is a wonderful collection of books created for children to view and listen to stories by local authors and illustrators. Many of them are read aloud by fantastic, predominantly Australian and New Zealand, storytellers.

Overdrive - Library ebooks

All students can access a wide range of library ebooks using Overdrive. However, the books available will be particularly relevant to students in 3-6. Many students in grades 5 and 6 will have the app installed on their iPads already. These instructions will help you to get access to your child’s account.

Epic

In addition to the above resources, many classes will continue to use their Epic accounts. Please chat to your child’s teacher for your child’s class code.

Reading Aloud to your Children

We would also like to take this time to remind you of the benefits of spending quality time reading a good book aloud to your child. Many of us know the importance of reading aloud to our children when they are young. However, research shows that reading aloud to children right up into their teenage years has many benefits.

Reading aloud:

  • Develops a love of reading in children
  • Models fluent reading
  • Helps expand children’s vocabulary
  • Exposes children to new authors, texts and genres
  • Builds awareness and empathy in children
  • Improves children’s long-term reading success

Thank you to our two Teaching and Learning Specialists; Heather Jenkins and Zoe Picton for coordinating these important resources for students, teachers and parents.

We hope the first few weeks of Home Learning in Term 3 has been relatively smooth and successful.

With best wishes,

Steve
