Greetings from Kerrie

Tough

Stage 4 restrictions are bringing even more challenges for us all.  We know it’s tough — and it’s tougher for some than others. Home-schooling is tough. Not being able to visit family and friends and provide needed care and support is tough. Losing your job is tough.

Human rights are the rights of us all, together. The simple act of wearing a mask is a small sacrifice to protect another person as is limiting our movements out and about. To get through COVID-19, we must think of others.  Nations that work as a team, not as individuals, fare the best.  Talk is about overcoming the pandemic with kindness and compassion.  A healthy society underpins a functioning economy, teamwork makes the dream work, and kindness and compassion should drive action.

It will be a tough few weeks for us all.  But look out for each other, think of each other and we will get through this.  Soon enough, it will be spring, with its warm weather and blossoms, hugging a stranger might just be OK.

Student Achievement

Thought we could celebrate and lift our spirits collectively by acknowledging the wonderful work that our children are doing either onsite or with remote learning.  Here are just some examples of them:

100 days of Preps!

Congratulations to all our Preps who have made it through to their first 100 days of school.  Notice I said ‘of’ and not ‘at’.  This year’s Preps have had a unique experience of their first year of school with remote learning and are doing so well with it, a big milestone.  As we were online, everyone dressed up and took part in lots of activities to celebrate. The Preps made a 100 Days of Prep crown, a reflection mobile and a monster made up of 100 limbs!

Anita, Prep teacher, had all staff contribute to a dance to the tune of ‘Celebration’ which she filmed and edited and posted on the Prep Google Classroom to surprise the Preps to celebrate their 100 days.  Hope they got as many laughs as we did from watching it!

Well done Preps, you are a wonderful group, we are proud of you all.  Thank you to all the Prep teachers and parents, and year 6 Buddies, for supporting their learning and growth for their first (unique!) 100 days at school.

Prep - Art

The Preps celebrated National Aboriginal & Torres Strait islander Children's Day and made artwork to show their support.  Have a look at the beautiful work they posted.

Year 5/6’s – The Spanish Flu and Covid-19

The year 5/6’s were given a video clip of the historic Spanish Flu to watch. They were asked to note the similarities and differences between it and the Covid-19 pandemic.  Here’s what some of them said:

Some of the ways that they tried to stop the Spanish flu from spreading are the same as what we are doing now to stop Covid 19. Things like wearing masks, isolation, social distancing and cancelling events.

Jacinta S

They also had a second wave like we did and it was very contagious.

Deena V

They did the same thing as Covid 19.

Brandon A

Medical facilities are far better. the science of epidemiology is far more advanced isolation is better understood and was at the end of a world war 1.

Charlie T

One Similarity from the spanish flu and Covid-19 is that they both had to suspend or cancel big public meetings and everyone was isolated.

Angus I

The Spanish flu killed dogs and cats while COVID-19 only kills humans.

Livi C

I think that they were doing their best like we are by using the news and other things to inform people about the disease.

Claudia M

Wise words from our deep thinkers in the 5/6 area.

Prep Enrolments for 2021

Unfortunately, due to COVID 19 it looks unlikely that we will get to run tours this year.

If you are a new parent to Northcote Primary School and you are interested in enrolling your child, we strongly encourage you to download our enrolment form from our website as soon as possible.

Parents of current students with pre-school siblings - Have you enrolled your 2021 Prep yet?

If you have children currently attending NPS, have a pre-schooler AND you have not yet enrolled for next year, please download an enrolment form from the website as soon as possible and email completed forms to our school.

Warm Regards,

Kerrie
