Year 11 Reflection Day #2 - Resilience - "Falling Up"

On Friday 31 July, our Year 11 cohort returned to Oxford Falls for our second Reflection Day, based upon the concept of Resilience. To commence our day we reflected not only upon the idea of “retreat”, but how different the world is following our first Reflection Day prior to our online learning. What prompted great interest from students was that while the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted so many of our lives, there have been some beneficial outcomes from many of the restrictions placed upon us. Depending upon the perspective one takes when looking at issues and problems that confront us, challenges and obstacles can often bring out the best in us causing us to be more resourceful and thus grow. Hence, to bounce back following challenges in our lives often requires us to consider the perspective that we take when looking at any given situation.

Students were asked to consider their own lives at present, their challenges and obstacles that are thrown at them. At looking at scripture, students were asked to reflect upon whether we receive what we want or perhaps God throws us challenges that we need.

Our day was spent not only considering those obstacles we face, but also where we could find support, help and assistance. It was important for students to note that as a faith community, they are not expected to face difficulties on their own. With this in mind, Mr Ticli and Mr Brannan presented two case studies. Year 11 learnt of the challenges and obstacles faced by former students: Liam Knight and Greg Wade. These young men were thrust into situations where they had to confront extreme difficulty. Through the support of family, friends and their faith they have both made remarkable recoveries in overcoming difficulties in their lives.

Student led sessions provided a time of sharing knowledge and experiences. It became apparent that many of the challenges faced by students tended to be common across the cohort. What was also shared was the times when many students do not take the assistance or advice that is available, thinking that they must face their difficulties on their own.

Our day concluded with the boys being asked to consider their obstacles in life differently. The boys were asked to remember that regardless of the effort they put into their lives, they must be prepared that everything may not go to plan. While they realise that they have no control over many outcomes, they have control over their actions.
