Principal's Message
Hon Angus Taylor MP with the Principal Mr Graham Jones
Welcome back to Term 3, 2020. I hope you enjoyed quality time with your family over the school holidays and have started the new term with renewed vigour. Hopefully, Term 3 will resemble a 'normal' term and consist of face to face teaching and learning in its entirety. Time will tell.
Teacher Accreditation
Congratulations to Miss Moorby and Miss Thomas for completing their Teacher Accreditation at the proficient level. They both worked extremely diligently to demonstrate their teaching proficiency and are an asset to our school. I am sure they will both have long and successful careers in the teaching profession, hopefully at Boorowa Central School.
Positive Behaviour for Learning having an impact
It was particularly pleasing to see that negative behavioural incidents across the school last fortnight were down by 2 thirds when compared to the data from 6 weeks ago. Whilst there are numerous factors to consider, it is obvious that our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) approach to explicitly teaching expected behaviours is having an impact on student behavioural choices. The majority of students are focused on their learning and this is great to see. The PBL focus for the next fortnight is 'consider others'. This applies to the playground when including others in games and the classroom when following instructions to ensure all students have the best opportunity to learn.
I addressed secondary students on Wednesday to establish a 'minimum expectation' in all classrooms. I made it very clear to all students that phones are to be 'off and away', including earphones, during all lessons and hats are to be removed before entering buildings.
Parent-Teacher Interviews
It was great to speak with the many parents and their children who came to the secondary parent-teacher interviews on Tuesday night. It was also good to speak to parents as I ducked into infants & primary classrooms throughout the week. Even though we were well spread out due to social distancing, the feeling in all rooms was positive with a real sense of partnership between teachers and parents - the essential ingredient to student success.
Students who demonstrated sustained effort and application to their learning throughout the first semester were recognised personally with a letter from myself. Infants and primary letters were sent at the end of the last term and secondary letters should arrive home this week. Please congratulate your child if they receive this letter and continue to reinforce the value of always trying your best.
Upcoming events
We have our annual Transition Evening next Tuesday. 2021 kindergarten parents are invited to a tour of the classroom at 5:30 pm before meeting in the library with Year 7 parents for an official welcome. Kindergarten and Year 7 parents will then move onto separate locations for a more in-depth look into the school. I encourage all parents who are considering Kindergarten and Year 7 at Boorowa Central School to attend the evening and to see what we have to offer.
Year 8 into 9 and 10 into 11 subject selection night will be held on Tuesday 18 August 2020. It will be in the Library, 6:00 pm for parents and students in Year 8 and 7:00 pm for parents and students in Year 10. It is the vital first step into choosing elective subjects as part of their pattern of study for Year 8 students and essential for Year 10 students as they will now be choosing all of their subjects to study in Stage 6.
Cancelled events
It is with a heavy heart that we have had to cancel the following events. With the ongoing health concerns surrounding COVID-19, we are unable to host large numbers of parents and community members on-site for school events. Therefore the annual SMArt Drama night has been cancelled as has grandparents day for 2020. Although this is very disappointing for everyone, it will ensure that these events will be bigger and better in 2021.
