Reflection on remote learning a teachers perspective

I Love Remote Learning - Louise Olsen VCAL/FLO Teacher

I love remote learning.

Remote learning has made me more organised. All materials have to be available for students in a timely manner, and Google Classroom makes creating rubrics, marking and record-keeping so much easier than my previous methods on paper. I am able to mark student work and return it to them very quickly, which they appreciate.

I have also never been more creative. I am able to tailor assignments to students’ interests as well as introduce some sensitive content around social issues in a way that is more safe individually than in a real whole-class setting.

I am able to work one-on-one with students if need be in a Google Meet, sharing screens and sometimes scribing for them in a shared Google Doc, and because I am more efficient in developing and marking work, I have more time to follow up with my Mentor students who may be disengaged or struggling.

I get about 11 bonus hours a week when I would normally be travelling to and from school or being at school during recess and lunch times. When I’m at home I can put washing on and hang it out and get started on dinner in breaks throughout the day. It has been great being able to walk the dog as part of my lunch break when it is warmer, rather than having to brave the cold before 8am, and I can listen to music whenever I am not actually ‘in class’.
