Teaching and Learning

Room 7

In room 7 we have started to look at and talk about symmetrical shapes and patterns. In the coming weeks students will create their own symmetrical patterns, pictures and shapes. We will also explore the school yard and look for symmetry in our natural and built environment. Keep a look out when you are out and about and see if you can spot some symmetrical shapes and patterns too!

In this activity, students folded the piece of paper to create one line of symmetry, then they added the main features of a face, making sure that each side looked as similar as could be. There are many shapes that have multiple lines of symmetry and we will be exploring these too. They coloured their artwork using pastels and then outlined each shape with black to make the colours pop. Hopefully in the near future you will be able to come upstairs and view our workout for yourself!

Did you know that May 5th was Children’s Day in Japan? It's a day when parents celebrate their children and make wishes for them to grow up and be strong and healthy. Two key symbols for this celebration are the koi fish and the samurai warrior as they both embody strength and courage.  Children have already been busy this term, making origami samurai helmets(kabuto)and carp kites (koinobori) while learning about this cultural event.  Room 10 have been extra busy making mini origami samurai helmets at home to add to a giant koi for their classroom!
