Year 8 History

In Year 8, Knights and Samurais (History) students have been learning about feudal Japanese cultural traditions and the impact of religion and meditation on the Samurai.

Studentsare working on creating a Zen Garden. Students are to build their own Zen Garden and submit their pictures of their Zen Gardens on Thursday. Cultivating a Zen Garden is said to put one in a meditative state, my thought being that in these uncertain times, cultivating a Zen Garden and being in a calm and meditative state is not a bad thing.

Textiles

Packages were sent out to the Textile students who were excited to have a practical activity to complete.

The packages were well received  and have created so much creativity and enjoyment for students and the wider community that have taken the opportunity to make them.. and here is a picture of the first completed task.

Textile students are also making a Covid-19 Quilt, with squares added by students and staff.

Below is the image of one of the squares.

Year 8 Nesting Boxes

Between Christmas and New Year, 2019, much of East Gippsland was scorched by fire and the whole of the state was blanketed in a thick layer of smoke.

These fires resulted in the loss of thousands of square kilometres of habitat homes for a wide range of wildlife.

Native birds and mammals need hollows in old trees for nesting.

Environmental loss reduces the number of nesting holes for these animals, leading to increased competition for nesting holes and a decrease in the population of individual species.

Over 70 schools across the state have come together to create new homes to assist in the rebuilding of the ecosystems lost.

Our Year 8 students have made about 50 wildlife boxes that will be taken back to East Gippsland and donated to local Landcare groups for installation.
