REGIONAL INTERSCHOOL SPORT

YEAR 7 BOYS TABLE TENNIS

On Friday, October 14th, Our Year 7 Boys Table Tennis team of Soham Dhital, Sher Sidhu, Rio Barrett, Pranshu Mistry and Jonathan Blyth competed in the Regional Table Tennis Championships in Kilsyth. The boys lost their first game on a countback against the eventual winners Ringwood Secondary College, after a very tight contest. They went on to win their next match and qualify for the semi-finals against Glen Waverley Secondary College. The boys competed extremely well but narrowly lost.

The boys represented the school extremely well, applying great effort, but also exemplary conduct in the way they interacted with the other participants.

YEAR 7 BOYS' TENNIS

Report by Rio Barrett

On Monday the 24th of October, I and three other Year 7 students headed to Ringwood Central Tennis Club to compete in the Regional Tennis Round Robin.

The students representing the school were, myself (Rio), Hector, Kenny, and Sher, accompanied by Mr Cochrane. We went to play against all the other teams who came first in their division in a round-robin, consisting of 4 matches of singles and 2 matches of doubles per round. The winner of our round-robin in pool A would later verse the winner of pool B. Once we arrived, we versed Norwood HS in the first round. We all won our singles convincingly, but a series of unforced errors saw the doubles games be a lot more competitive. We then moved on to the second round to take on Rowville HS, a school with a thriving Sports Academy. In that round, our whole team tried our best and managed to win a few games against them, but just couldn’t beat them, ending up losing the six matches.

However, our teamwork was strong, taking both doubles matches to a tiebreaker! Our final match-up was against Auburn HS, and after some intense matches, we ended up just winning by one game, 16-15! This took our daily overall score to 2-1, finishing second in Pool A. We finished our day with some lunch and came back to school knowing that we represented the school well.

YEAR 7 GIRLS' SOFTBALL

On Tuesday, October 25th, our Year 7 Girls' Softball team competed in the Regional Championships in Ferntree Gully. We had a solid start, winning our first match. However, we lost our next two games against two very strong teams.  (More information to follow)

YEAR 7 BOYS' BASEBALL

On Tuesday, October 25th, our Year 7 Boys' Baseball team competed alongside the girls' Softball team, in the Regional Championships in Ferntree Gully. We struggled to gel in the first match, suffering a convincing defeat. However, from this point onwards, the boys showed significant improvement in the way they pitched, fielded and batted, and also in the way they worked together. They won the next match and narrowly lost their final game in a very competitive performance.

YEAR 8 GIRLS' TABLE TENNIS

Report by Bianka Covelli

The trip to Kilsyth Sports Stadium for the regional table tennis competition was lengthy, due to the long distance and traffic. I felt a bit sceptical about whether we would make it on time, but fortunately, we managed to arrive not only on time but ten minutes before the game started!

After a few minutes of practice, it was time to play our first school. Everyone in the team managed to win all their singles and doubles games, which instilled some faith in the team that we could make it to the semi-finals. Before long, we were playing the next school in our pool. All four of us were able to win all our games. This meant that we were the winners of our pool and would be going to the semi-finals.

After a nervous, but good hour of practising, it was finally known to us that we were playing Balwyn High School. We all played to the best of our ability in our singles games. To draw with Balwyn High School and to have a chance of getting into the finals, we needed to win both our doubles games. The exhilarating doubles match culminated with a thrilling result: South Oakleigh College and Balwyn High School had both drawn-in games won! This, of course, meant that the scores had to be added up.

From there began a nervous wait of who was getting into the finals. After a few, tense minutes, it was Balwyn High School who had narrowly won by eight points. I was a bit disappointed, nevertheless, I was happy with how I performed, and I enjoyed playing table tennis with my teammates, as well as playing against other schools. It was an amazing experience and overall, it was a fun and enjoyable day. Thank you to Miss Jenkins for looking after us on that day and for driving us there.

As was the case in Badminton in Term 2, the girls fell just short of advancing to the Regional final. However, should be very proud of their level of performance and their attitude throughout the day, and also the year.

YEAR 8 BOYS' VOLLEYBALL

On Monday, October 24th, our Year 8 Boys Volleyball team competed in the Regional Championships at the State Volleyball Centre in Dandenong.

At the conclusion of our first match against Mooroolbark College, both teams had won one set each, however, we lost by 1 point overall. We also lost our remaining two games, but one of these matches led to most of the set against the eventual competition winners in Rowville Secondary College. The boys who represented this team are to be congratulated for the commitment they made to training in the lead-up to this event.

YEAR 7 & 8 BOYS' HOCKEY

Our Year 7 & 8 Boys Hockey team were scheduled to compete in October however, this event was cancelled due to rain. The competition has been rescheduled to Friday, November 4th.

REGIONAL ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

On Monday, October 10th we took a team of 13 students to the Eastern Metropolitan Region Athletics Championships at Knox Athletics Carnival. We had several students perform exceptionally well across the day and receive medals for finishing in the first three.

Will Amiatu - 14's Discus and Shot Put

2nd Tricia Santosh - 12/13's 800m

STATE ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

On Monday, October 17th we had Sophie Volpert and Will Amiatu represent the school at the State Athletics Championships at Lakeside Stadium. Sophie finished 3rd in the 12/13-year-old Discus and Will finished 2nd in the 14-year-old Shot Put and 3rd in the 14-year-old Discus. To finish in the top few students in the state in these events is an outstanding achievement for Sophie and Will.

That concludes our sports program for 2022. It has been fantastic to have a full year of competition without the interruptions of previous years, and also to see the effort and achievements of many students. We had three students represent the school at the State competition and had many teams and individuals qualify for Regional competitions.

With a new gym and supporting programs next year, we will look to create further opportunities for students and build on the successes achieved this year. I would also like to thank the staff who have run training sessions and assisted at competitions throughout the year.
