2023 School Leader Introductions

Hi everyone, my name is Sylvia Krozian and I am one of your 2023 College Captains. A fun fact about me is I’ve always loved painting ever since I was a small girl starting art classes at 5 years old. I've really enjoyed being your Student Representative Council President this year, and I am very excited about all the wonderful opportunities as your School Captain representing South Oakleigh as a senior leader with my co-captain Jason. We look forward to working together with students to achieve their best and promoting a positive and harmonious school community.

Good day everyone! I'm Jason and along with Sylvia, we'll be your School Captains for 2023. Here's a little more about me: I enjoy working with electronics and computers, and I adore listening and playing to music. As Banksia House Captain this year, I have listened carefully to students about their schooling experience and I'm excited to be able to continue improving the student experience next year. I’m looking forward to working with other students, fellow captains and the Principal team as well as the ideas they may have to achieve the best school environment possible.

My name is Genna, and I am thrilled to be your S.R.C. President in 2023! I will be working alongside Shyli Barak, and together we aim to grow, expand, and improve the Student Representative Council. I have been an active member of the S.R.C. since 2020 and have been working hard to raise money and awareness for various causes. Around the school I have also been a big part of the Performing Arts and Music community, taking part in VCE music classes and school productions, so I'm sure I've met many of you at concerts and rehearsals. Next year, I will work with Shyli to bring Student Experience and Well-being to the forefront of the S.R.C.'s work. I look forward to hearing feedback and gaining input from you next year!

My name is Shyli and I am delighted to be your 2023 S.R.C. Vice President. A huge part of my life is leading, including at school with S.R.C., in my job where I run birthday parties for kids, and at my scouts where I lead Year 7s and progress through roles similar to student leadership here.

I am so excited to be your S.R.C Vice President alongside Genna! In 2023, a huge goal for us is improving the student experience and well-being, through campaigns, in the classroom and extra-curricular activities across the school.

I really hope to get to know everyone involved in leadership and anyone in the community interested in what we do!

Hey, my name’s Alejandro Jose Mariona, although people just call me AJ. I am one of the Acacia House Captains for 2023 and I look forward to getting to know everyone in Acacia better. Some interesting things about me are I’m Irish-Ukrainian-Salvadoran, back in El Salvador there is a prison named after my family’s last name (not really, it’s named after an area of the same name) and that I like exploring different areas I’m not familiar with. As Acacia House Captain I have one plan, the betterment of the house and that will start with consulting Acacians about their thoughts on the house chant.

Dear fellow Banksians! I’m Greg and together with Stacey, we will be leading our house in 2023! I am honoured to have been elected your Banksia House Captain.

I bring forward to this role my previous student leadership experience, including my current role as S.R.C. Leading Curriculum Representative but importantly my commitment and energy. I am looking very much forward to boosting our Banksian house spirit and seeing our house grow and creating new memories. I am very excited to launch some new ideas that we as a team will bring to light. A fun fact about myself! I am very much interested in cars, I could be here all day going on about them! Particularly V8s and the Ford Mustang GT (which I hope to have in my driveway someday!).

I am always open for a chat! See you around Banksians!

Hello, I’m Claire and I’m so excited to represent Waratah as a House Captain in 2023! Together with Nathan, we aim to build better connections between students in Waratah. We believe that participation is key to winning the House Cup, and we will work to build house spirit amongst our peers. I think as a leader it is important to be friendly and approachable, and I will always be here for anyone who wants to chat :)

Hi, I’m Nathan Cohen and I am one of the new Waratah House Captains for 2023. I’ve previously had two leadership roles as a Peer Support Leader and Student Representative on School Council. I also run my own chicken business called Los Pollos Hermanos. What I’m most excited to do with this role is bring even more enthusiasm to Waratah and start consulting the House about their thoughts on the house chant.

World Mental Health Day

On Wednesday the 12th of October we had World Mental Health Day. The SRC invited students and teachers to wear novelty socks. The sales of the socks went very smoothly with the amount being raised over $200 for Beyond Blue. A very big shout out to Logan Hamilton for buying 15 pairs and everyone who wore novelty socks! Overall the day was a success with awareness of Mental Health Day being spread and over $200 raised for Beyond Blue.

1 in 5 Australians are affected by mental illness annually, yet many don’t seek help because of stigma. As we enter a new phase of living with COVID-19, prioritising mental health and well-being has become more important than ever!

Some mental health tips from SOC Wellbeing Team are: Stay active, eat well, connect with others, do something you enjoy each day, limit media consumption, keep a routine, get an early night, be kind to yourself, and seek help.

Year 10 Update:

The year 10 cohort has had an adventurous start to term 4! We have been immersed in various activities including our Health PE excursions and currently going through the process of course selection for our VCE journey beginning next year.

During our scheduled physical education session, our classes walked over to the Olympic Ice-Skating Centre here in Oakleigh South. It gave everyone the opportunity to bond with their peers and create new memories and stories to tell for our year level. Everyone had a blast of a time.

Our health classes also took part in fencing. Fencing is a sport that involves the use of a sword. We were taken through the tips and tricks of fencing.

We were then given the opportunity to verse each other (Being Safe Of Course!). Everyone had an amazing experience! Thank you to the year 10 Health PE teachers for organising these excursions/incursions.

Our newly-formed Formal Committee has been hard at work preparing for our year 11 formal 2023. They have hosted a Bake Sale, where they sold baked goodies and treats and all funds that were raised will go towards supporting this special occasion taking place next year. Thank you to the Formal Committee for the hard work they have put into going towards the special occasion.

We do have a busy few weeks this term, including our upcoming semester 2 exams as well as finalizing our courses for next year, but we will push through it all together!
