Year 8 HASS ‘Design a City’ Inquiry

Year 8 Humanities and Social Sciences students have been busily creating sustainable cities as part of their Geography unit this term. This group inquiry project involved a research, design, and implementation component with students able to create either a ‘physical’ design (using recyclable material) or a ‘virtual’ design (using Minecraft).

The HASS Teaching Team and myself were blown away with the thought that was put into these designs, and I am certain that from this task, we will have some budding urban designers of the future! Special mention must go to the Mary Ward students who completed an amazing cityscape using LEGO blocks to showcase their knowledge of sustainable urban design.

First Lego League Winners

The JTC Robotics Team, JTCS33, competed in the First Lego League Regional Competition at St. Stephen’s College. The team was awarded the second place Champion’s Award and will advance to the National FLL Championship – West on 10 December at Curtin University.  The challenge focuses on engineering, coding, design thinking, and developing the soft skills needed to work as a team.  We look forward to cheering them on in the next round.

Year 9 Outdoor Education Camp

The Semester Two, Year 9 Outdoor Education Camp was a fantastic experience for all involved. The students and staff were blessed with beautiful spring weather, providing a memorable outdoor experience for the group. The water-based camp took place at Rottnest Island and Ern Halliday Recreation Camp in Hillary’s. The stunning scenery at Rottnest Island catered for activities including snorkeling, cycling, and hiking. At Ern Halliday students engaged in archery, paddling and team building. Students were also able to apply skills acquired during classroom learning, including trangia cooking, tent construction, minimal impact techniques, and many more. Overall, the group vibe and cohesion on camp were outstanding and provided an enriched learning experience outside the classroom.

Year 9 HASS Trade Fair

On Tuesday 8 and Wednesday 9 November, Year 9 Humanities and Social Sciences students participated in a Fair that focused on Australia’s major trading partners. This interactive experience was an integral part of the Economics and Business unit that students are currently studying.

The Year 6 and Year 7 students and College staff who visited the fair were greeted with a vast array of different displays and interactive activities aimed to ‘wow the audience’.

A special thanks must go to Mr Joe Shaw (HASS Teacher) and the rest of the HASS teaching team for their amazing organisation and support during the Fair and to Doug Watson (Grounds and Maintenance Team) for his assistance with the setup of this event.

Bush tucker garden

Mr Haines' Year 7 Life Skills class spent an hour this week learning about the Noongar seasons and Indigenous bush food plants during a session run by the Tucker Bush organisation. The students planted 30 bush tucker plants with their bare hand, helping to establish our new bush tucker garden at the front of the College. The area will be used as an Aboriginal education resource and will also provide ingredients for our Food Technology classes, developing their knowledge of Indigenous ingredients.
