Parent Maths Night – Thursday, November 3rd

Thank you to all the parents and students that attended the Maths Night last night at school. Each family attended three sessions, each one on a different maths topic. It gave families an opportunity to hear about and experience how maths is taught at Vermont Primary. The night also provided us with a chance to showcase the amazing maths videos that students have been making with Ms Hannink during the year. Details on how parents can watch these videos on various mathematical topics and strategies will be sent home with students shortly. Each family attending last night left with a small pack of maths resources and information to assist with maths at home. Special thanks to Mr Wastie and the STEM staff committee for organising such an informative evening.

The Maths Night

By Hiya 4JH

On Thursday November 3rd, the parents and some of the students went to a Maths night.

First, we were in the stadium and a lot of projects were on the walls. My favourite was the Grade3 Where’s Wally and Grade 6 Bird’s Eye View 3d.

When the night started and someone showed the video of a Vermont Primary student doing Maths. It was cool!

Our first session was Number Sense where we learned that we try different strategies for one problem. I know this but my parents were learning. We watched a video to understand. After that, we got a problem and we tried different strategies.

We then went to Room 20 for fractions. We watched a video which was about a VPS student showing us how to add fractions and subtract fractions with different denominators. We then had to do either an addition one or subtraction one but in the middle of me doing the addition one an announcement came and we had to move to the next session.

We had to go to room 19 to do multiplication. This time the video was about a VPS student doing the lattice method. Then we did a problem with the lattice method 24 x 32 and I finished it. The teacher was super supportive. Then we watched another video about the stick method which was cool. Then we did a problem about it but I got it wrong and a girl showed us how to do it.

After that, there was an announcement to conclude the session. We then went to the stadium where a lucky number was drawn and the person won some games.

Math Strategy Help Videos

The Vermont Primary School STEM team is proud to finally be able to share our maths strategy help videos with the school community. You will have access to these videos via the link below and be able to support your child across a range of areas in Mathematics. The website will be updated with more help strategy videos as we create more in the future.

We ask that parents do not share the videos or individual logins with anyone. Usernames and passwords will given to students early next week.
