Year 4 News

Inquiry Incursion

On Friday we are looking forward to having an incursion titled, “Media Magic”. Students have been preparing stop animations and rehearsing parts for the radio and television show. This supports our Unit of Inquiry, “Factors within our environment influence the way people express themselves”.

Year 4 Camp

We would like to congratulate the Year 4 students on the way they conducted themselves on their first primary school camp. Despite very wet weather in Melbourne it seems Yarra Junction missed the daytime downpour and we were lucky enough to get all our activities in before the rain came at night during our movie – perfect timing!

It seems everyone’s favourite was the waterslide or the gaga pit and the disco was a fun night. Thanks to all the staff who supported us both at the camp and back at school.

My School Camp Waterslide Recount

By Ava T

As I walked down the small wooden stairs that come off the main deck, I had just come from morning tea and as well as still being hungry from the little piece of birthday cake I had just eaten I had this weird feeling in my belly. I felt like I had butterflies because I had never been on a waterslide that big but I also had an excited feeling at the same time.

As I skipped down the gravel path and onto the grass around the massive waterslide I was about to go on, a wave on excitement came through my feet and up to my arms as I wiggled them with heaps of excitement.

All the other kids in my group were either around the wooden railing around the waterslide or racing ahead of me as fast as they could.

Finally, I was on the wet, kind of soggy grass around the waterslide where Mrs Grant was kneeling down on the edge of the waterslide holding the blue foam mat, getting ready for the first kid to get on.

As Mrs Grant was wrapping the blue foam mat around Maddie, ready to let her go down, I stood there getting even more nervous  knowing that that will be me, there, at the top of the waterslide, about to go down.

As I stood next to the waterslide without a care in the world I had completely forgotten what I was about to do just as Stevie said, “Ava, come on, it’s you turn!” I was so confused because the last time I checked only the second person was going down and all of a sudden it was my turn!

Finally, after standing there for a few seconds that felt like ages I finally built up the courage to go down. As I stepped into the cold water that connected to the slide I was so excited but nervous at the same time! Mrs Grant placed the blue mat at the very edge of the slide, just before I would start to go down, she patted it to show me were exactly to sit. I had sat down and Mrs Grant told me to tuck my arms in, really close to my body, she told me that I had to get my left arm and hold the mat on the right side of my body and with my right arm I had to hold the left side.

Mrs Grant said 3..2..1!! and just as she let me go, weirdly I was not nervous I was only excited Mrs Grant shouted, “Have fun!”

At the bottom the water splashed my face and jenny was at the bottom with something called a speed gun to measure how fast you go and said that I   went 26 km, the second time I got 31km, the third time I got 41km and the third time I got 44km, breaking the record for all of the year fours, although I wasn’t the only person that got 44km I was the first to get it.

The end!

Robotics with Mrs Graham

We have been using the Lego Wedos with Mrs Graham and the students have coded them to move, light up and make noises. Take a look at some of these photos where the students are at work…

Literacy

All students have achieved their pen licences now and are writing neatly in pen – congratulations Year 4’s!

Remember to continue to work on your writing posture, pencil grip and letter formation. We are now working on persuasive texts for our learning tasks. Students are writing expositions on why Halloween should be celebrated and why Computer games are/are not a waste of time!

Resilience Project

Students have been working on gratitude, empathy and mindfulness. They worked outside drawing things in detail using magnifying glasses. Take a look…
