Year 1 News

We would like to share with you a video displaying the mammoth effort the Year One students went to in the last week of Term 3. The children celebrated their last day of the term by turning their classrooms into a Chocolate Factory as a culmination of all the learning completed, throughout our Unit of Inquiry. We hope you enjoy watching the excitement of the day.

Whoa! Where did that time go? With only 6 weeks of Year 1 to go, the students will be completing their final assessments in readiness for Year 2. Can you believe it?

Inquiry

This term started with an introduction to our final Unit of Inquiry ‘Sharing the Planet’. Since then, we have immersed the students in lessons of exploration, including topics such as habitats, flora and fauna that inhabit each unique habitat and adaptations that help living things survive in their habitat.

Persuasive Writing

On Thursday December 1st, the Year One students will be travelling by bus to Werribee Zoo. Leading up to the excursion, the children will be taught about the history of zoos and will explore the impact Werribee Zoo attempts to make on the conservation of endangered species. Following on from our excursion the children will be involved in a debate of sorts. Each child will be taught about the history and context of zoos and why they exist. The children will be asked to decide whether or not they agree that “Zoos are cruel and all animals should be released to the wild”. The children will partake in lessons that help build skills in persuasion. These lessons will help the children to consider different points of view, as well as their own, when finding arguments for and against, on a contentious issue.

Narrative Writing

Each week leading up to the end of Term 4, the children will be given a picture prompt to create their own narrative stories. This week the children have revisited what makes a good story. The children have learnt the importance of a strong beginning that introduces characters and a setting to their audience, a middle that includes a problem and a series of events and then finally a conclusion, that resolves the problem. We look forward to sharing these stories with you in coming weeks.

Maths

The students have been revising topics such as “sharing” and “groups of”. We have also revised telling the time to the hour and half hour on a digital or analogue clock. The students completed a learning task based on the book ‘When the Doorbell Rang’. We had fun acting out the story with real chocolate chip cookies before completing the written task.
