Karting Program – Gold Coast 500

Mr Andrew Devoy - Head of Technology

As part of the Karting Program in Boarding, last Friday saw ten lucky Boarding students be part of one of Australia’s most exhilarating sports – the “V8 Supercars” racing event on the Gold Coast.

The students were exposed to many educational aspects at the motorsport event, such as practical applications of maths, physical education, tourism, marketing, event management, media studies and engineering. Entry allowed access to the circuit and V8 Supercar Paddock, close to the excitement of the Team Transporters and the action in garages. They could enjoy the thrills of V8 Supercars practice sessions, support category sessions and on-track entertainment. In particular, the boys were invited to the Junior Press conference featuring race drivers; Will Davidson, Brodie Kostecki, Broc Feeney, Lee Holdsworth and David Reynolds as they answered questions from the students who attended the day. Our own Tim Tully also managed to sneak in a question to the drivers. It was an incredible opportunity to see what the students learnt in the Karting Program translated to life on and around the race track on a much larger scale.

The day was filled with a lot of noise and adrenalin as we made our way around the track. I know the students all had lots of fun, and I hope to see these students progressing through to the Formula Student Certificate II Engineering Pathways program in Year 11. The students experienced racing on a much smaller scale with the Karting program. I know that each student has an appreciation for the amount of work and effort that goes into competing at this top level.

All boys were impeccably dressed and well behaved on the day!
