Mellor 1/2 - English Cont

Reading

Students will continue taking readers home in which they are fluent and confident. The learning intention is for children to practice their reading and build their fluency. The level of your child’s reader is actually a guide for teachers and should not be the primary focus of your child’s reading. We do not encourage children to set the learning goal of “being on a higher reader level.” But rather, by setting goals around using punctuation effectively or increasing the amount of tricky words they are able to read; children will be more likely to improve their overall reading. The ultimate goal is to understand what one is reading (comprehension). Talking with your child about things such as characters or what is happening in the story is invaluable. Identifying new words is crucial during home reading while bedtime stories will help your child increase their vocabularies. Please note   Non-Fiction text should be central to home reading and children should be   encouraged to read a variety of books. During our Literacy Block time children will involved in a variety of reading activities for example   Guided Reading, partner reading, big book reading etc. Comprehension strategies and decoding skills will be explicitly taught during this time .Oral language will be a priority with targeted presentations and news talks throughout the term. While, individual teachers will have their own methods of organising their English programs, the learning intentions and success criteria in all areas will be the same  conceptually
