Safer Internet Day

On Tuesday 7 February 2017,  I (Rhiannon Tyack), Ella Aarons and Ms Corben were invited to Facebook and Instagram’s new offices at Docklands in Melbourne to participate in a half-day session called “Safety in the age of disappearing media.” It was hosted by Projectrockit and #girltakeover.

An artist named “Jeff the Peff” also joined the session to draw the events of the day, along with an aspiring singer, Kaiit.

As soon as everyone arrived we were sat down on numerous comfy chairs and couches in one of the open rooms with views of the city. It was there that the host group Projectrockit, joined by the children’s charity Plan International Australia, the anti-bullying group Sticks ‘n’ Stones and the New Zealand safety organisation NetSafe, the Children’s eSafety Commisioner Julie Inman Grant, Kaiitmusic and JeffthePeff all introduced themselves as well as all the schools attending the event. We learnt about what each group and person was about, and what Safer Internet Day was about along with the #girltakeover day.

As a starter, we played a human chain game that was like a mixture of Chinese whispers and charades. Without using any words, we had to tell a story about a robot who fell in love with another robot but realised that the other robot was only his reflection.

After morning tea (a few fridges full of drinks, not to mention their super cute and yummy cupcakes and donuts), we all got into small groups and shared thoughts on how we can get people to understand safety on the Internet. We talked about parents on social media and their understanding of it, and how they need to know how important it is to their kids. We used props and photos to get our message onto social media.

At the end of the event, lunch was provided in the form of burgers and chips that were super delicious, along with a large variety of snacks and show bags to take away.
