Old Collegians

In the run up to the Rio Olympics we highlight some of our Old Collegians Olympians.
Peter Fitzgerald
Attended St Bede’s College 1966 – 1971
A champion sprinter over 200m, Peter was an Australian athletics record holder, Australian champion and Olympic representative, when he made the semi-finals of the 200 metres sprint at the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics. Peter finished 13th overall in the 200m and 46th in the 100. He was part of the 2012 Olympic Selection Committee.
Peter is a successful and well respected lawyer who has recently returned to Athletics coaching. He is currently coaching 400m athlete Morgan Mitchell who will compete in the upcoming 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Tony Marchant
Attended St Bede’s College 1952-1954
Winning Olympic Gold in the 2,000m tandem at the 1956 games in Melbourne, Tony (or “Tippy” as he was known!) was an accomplished cyclist. While at school he was Victorian and Australian Sprint and Time Trial champion. Tony had little formal training and only took up the sport at the age of 16 because his friends liked the sport. He earned some money from selling flowers and delivering newspapers and bought a semi-racing bike. Later, he was a given a proper racing bike from his first trainer Merv Norton.
Tony turned professional in 1958 and won many races in Australia and Europe before retiring in 1961.
