Reflecting on Student / Parent / Guardian / Teacher Conferences

At the end of Term 1 we had Student / Parent/Guardian / Teacher Conferences. At the time we encouraged students and families to reflect on the feedback and work towards achieving goals in Term 2.

The number of families that met with teachers was great and the teachers made positive comments about how good it was to speak to the students and parents about the progress that is being made by the student.

A number of teachers made reference that during the conferences parents would say comments like - “I struggled with this in high school too.”, “At least you have better handwriting than me.”, “You don’t need this later on.”, “It’s all so different these days.” , “I never did well in tests either.” I’m sure that in many of these comments were made the reassure or keep the young person positive. However in some cases these types of comments can limit the young person’s potential and in some way make it ‘ok’ not to strive for more.

Another way of keeping your child positive and on track for improvements is: ‘it might be hard, but if you work at it you can improve’, ‘you may not understand it yet, but seek assistance and support and you can improve’, ‘if it was easy, where’s the challenge?’, ‘making mistakes is a sign of learning’

We have spent some time working on developing a growth mindset – where we all try to improve. With a positive attitude and with great effort we can continue to improve and make gains with our learning.

We encourage all students to think positive and think of these conferences along with all other feedback provided as an opportunity for learning and development.

Emergency Management Drill

On Friday 5 April we conducted an Emergency Management Drill. These drills are important to practice as they might be needed in the future. Although the likelihood is rare that an incident occurs where students are required to evacuate or go into lockdown, it is important that they know and understand what to do if the situation arises. Throughout the year we conduct various types of drills on different days and at different times to ensure all members of the school community know exactly what to do in an emergency situation.

Assemblies

We will continue to hold Assemblies throughout the year. These Assemblies will be approximately every second week. Students will need to at school before 8:35 am on Assembly days. Students and parents are asked to check Compass for the schedule.

Term 2 schedule:

Monday 20 May – Sub-School Assemblies

Monday 3 June – Sub-School Assemblies

NAPLAN

NAPLAN is coming soon. Students in Years 7 and 9 will participate in the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). Students undertake national testing in areas of Language conventions, writing, reading and numeracy. Students are encouraged to try their best.

NAPLAN will occur during weeks 4 and 5 of Term 2. If you do not wish for your child to undertake NAPLAN testing please speak to myself.

In Term 3 Parents/Carers will receive a copy of their child’s actual results and a pamphlet that explains how to interpret the report.

Attitudes to School Survey

The Attitudes to School Survey is an annual survey of student voice that provides data to support student wellbeing, engagement, school improvement and planning in schools.

The survey will be conducted online for students from Years 4 to 12, from Monday 29 April to Friday 7 June 2019. The Attitudes to School Survey will be conducted during class time. The overall objective of the annual Attitudes to School survey is to collect data about the opinions of students to assist schools with planning, developing curriculum and supporting students. The survey assists schools to gain an understanding of students’ perceptions and their experience of school. It provides schools with valuable data on students’ views of their wellbeing, teaching, learning and school in general.

At Scoresby Secondary College we take this survey very seriously and use the results and subsequent student forums to guide our practice in all areas.
