Callan Services Immersion

Callan Services Immersion 2016: Gerehu, Port Moreby
The final week of Term 2 saw a delegation of 5 Year 9 and 10 students accompanied by Mr Long, Mr Pfeiffer (Year 10 father), and myself conduct a Social Justice Immersion at The Christian Brothers Callan Services Special Education Resource Centre, Papua New Guinea.
Callan services has been the subject of key Social Justice Initiatives of St Pius X College in recent times and leads PNG in educational services provided to students with disability. The experience of working with these students and staff was an inspirational experience, as was our visit to Br Francis Toliman’s Year 12, Jubilee Catholic School Physics class of 52 students.
Thanks are due to Br Phil Grundy, (Old Boy of St Pius X College ’68), and Year 9 Parent Mr Jay Mendoza who hosted us in Port Moresby and whose local knowledge was indispensable. Through the generosity of Mrs Di Munich, Ms Jan Hunter, St Pius X College and Officeworks, we were also able to donate highly valued stationary packs and calculators on our visits in Port Moresby and on the Kokoda Track.
Through the Edmund Rice Foundation link below this initiative has generously raised over $8,250 which will be used to fund hearing and sight testing and treatment for students throughout Papua New Guinea.
