  1. Terrific effort from the Year 7 girls - def Staughton 31/2, def Bacchus Marsh16/12, and in 2 thrillers where we won with a goal in both games in the last 5 secs we def Gisborne 20/19 and def Sunbury 18/17 to win the Division.
  2. Year 8 girls - def Alice Miller 25/3, def Sunbury 20/17, drew Bacchus Marsh 15/15 to qualify for the final but we were no match for an incredibly good Gisborne team in the final.

Of the 23 runners, we had 18 qualify for the Western Region final

Intermediate Girls Soccer

The Intermediate Boys and Girls Soccer competition for the region was held on Friday, 17th May at Kurunjang Reserve. It was a day of excitement, disappointment and sunny weather. The Intermediate Girls Soccer team turned up at 8.30am, ready to take on local rivals: Bacchus Marsh.

After a quick group huddle and prayer, led by team captain Bakita, the team took the field full of energy and spirit. In the first half, the girls struggled to control the game, allowing Bacchus Marsh to have a number of shots on goal. However, in the second half, after a strong pep talk by co-coaches, Paskazia and Janet, the girls returned to the pitch and showed some very nice football skills. All players worked hard to string passes together and get through the Bacchus Marsh defence. Fatema, Beatrice and Anna controlled the mid-field, creating opportunities for the strikers. Achan and Jennifer provided both attacking and defensive support as wide-backs. Angab, Eva and Cynthia controlled the ball whenever it came near the defence and helped to shut down most of the attacks by Bacchus Marsh.

Victoria and Abeny, up front, brought unrelenting pressure crashing down on their Bacchus Marsh opponents. It was too much for the other team, and both players scored in the game, securing the win for Melton Secondary College. The final score was 3-1 to Melton, meaning that the girls were into the finals!

It was a long wait for the team between the morning game and the finals at the end of the day. The final was a much tougher game against Sunbury, and there had been a long break with plenty of sun. The referee started the game before the players were properly set up, but Melton recovered and showed their football prowess. Agnes and Gloria worked hard in the back line to absorb the pressure and Amer showed great strength in the goals. However, a misunderstanding between the players and the referee saw the Sunbury team steal the ball in the goal box and score.

This did not stop the Melton players, they kept their heads held high and fought hard on the field. Abeny and Victoria continued to apply pressure up front, with Zaina supporting from the right wing to keep the ball in our attacking half. Even with their hard work and constant pressure, the Melton girls could not quite get a goal back and the game ended 0-1 to Sunbury.

While it was a disappointing end to the competition for the team, there was much fun had by all and great perseverance shown by all the players on the field!
