Burgmann College

2020 Accommodation Application Process Information

Since 1971, we have been delighted to have students from across Australia call Burgmann College home during their university years at the Australian National University (ANU).

I am writing to welcome students from your school to consider applying to live at Burgmann College when they come to study at the ANU.

Located in Canberra, Burgmann College is an independent not-for-profit college, affiliated with the ANU and home to 360 undergraduate and postgraduate students. What was true in the 1970s when Burgmann was established is still true today: the small personal college, with strong pastoral care and ample opportunities for self-governance, which is accessible to students for at least three years of their studies, continues to be the ideal environment for academic, social and professional development. Our independence has enabled us to prioritise these values and to be highly flexible and agile in responding to changing student needs.

The following features continue to be unique and distinctive to Burgmann:

Supporting young people through transitions

Every aspect of life at Burgmann is carefully designed to support students going through two of the most extraordinary transitions of their lives: from home and school to semi- independence and young adulthood, to career and life beyond. Our mission is the growth of the whole person—and there is, quite simply, nothing like the residential experience to equip young people with the interpersonal and intellectual skills that will best serve them as employees and citizens of the world.

“Happy and healthy residents mean happy and healthy students—yet we see our job as not just contributing to the ANU, but growing brilliant people.

College life is a transformative experience.”

Sally Renouf, Principal

The Principal and Deputy Principal residing on-site

Having senior staff residing in close proximity to residents is considered best practice internationally, yet Burgmann is the only residence at the ANU where this is true and is one of the few remaining residences to do so in Australia. It is one of the aspects that contributes strongly to residents feeling safe in their home-away-from-home environment and as though they are still part of a family. I am delighted to advise that I continue the great tradition of the Master’s dog, with Eve and Juno for residents to play with. And the family atmosphere is reinforced by my two year old daughter as well as the children of the Deputy Principal also living within the community.

“As a Residential Advisor, I really like that the Principal and Deputy Principal are right there,

because then we don’t feel we’re 100% responsible for the residents.

They are literally only three minutes away.”
