Take care, be Sun Aware!

Melanoma talk given to students

Jay Allen, Community coordinator at Melanoma Institute Australia and 10 year survivor of Stage 3 Melanoma presented a Sun Safety workshop and education session that included parts of his journey and footage of his appearance on the Channel 9 - RPA program, as far back as 2008.

Jay's message of awareness and safe behaviours involving time spent in the sun are invaluable to our students and staff given that the Melanoma Institute Australia statistics show the Cowra area has a high percentage of Melanoma.

Jackie Long assisted Jay on stage by giving a demonstration on how to correctly apply sunscreen.  Jay also presented a five minute YouTube clip to the students titled "Dear 16 year old Me" which gave an insight into how other Melanoma survivors have coped with their diagnosis.  Students also took the opportunity to ask questions at the end of the session about Melanoma and effects on families.

Cowra High School would like to thank Jay for his very informative presentation.
