Year 5/6 NAIDOC Week

Last Friday Miss Salmon’s reading group baked lemonade and wattleseed scones. In our reading sessions we were learning about NAIDOC week and the significance of the wattleseed. We found out that the wattleseed was traditionally ground and used to make a type of flour. The Aboriginal women would collect the pods and dry the seeds with fire, before grinding them into flour to be mixed with water and made into cake. These cakes were baked in the coals of a fire and eaten immediately or stored for later use. Our reading group not only needed to use our baking and reading skills, but also our maths skills as we had to halve the recipe. We baked the scones in the kids' kitchen. Once the scones were ready it was eating time. We had plum jam and cream on our scones, they were delicious.

Hoop Time Basketball

On Wednesday 19th July some of our Grade 3/4 students represented St John's in the Hoop Time Challenge at Frankston Basketball Stadium. The teams fought hard all day and displayed excellent sportsmanship. The girls team lost in the semi-final to the eventual winners and the boys team made it into the grand final but fell short in a tough game to come runners up for the day. Congratulations to all the students for their efforts on the day and thank you to the parents who came to support and score!
