Year 3 Learning

Year Three have made a wonderful start to Term 3! Our key Inquiry Questions include:

-Who lived here first and how do we know?

-How has our community changed? What features have been lost and what features have been retained?

-What is the nature of the contribution made by different groups and individuals in the community?

We will pick a topic soon to look at the impact of change and write a picture story book to teach others.

In Science, we are looking at chemical change and have already participated in a workshop run by Hands on Science. Enjoy the photos above to see what experiments we have got up to and read the summary by Maddie, Sadie and Nanette:

At Hands On Science we learnt about the states of matter, if you don’t know what the states of matter are, it's just solids, liquids and gases. We did 6 experiments where we had to hypothesize, test and discuss our results.

One of our favourite activities was to make bouncy balls.   Pretty cool right? To make them we needed a cup of water, little green crystals and a moulder shaped as a sphere. First we put as many little green crystals as we could put in the moulder. After that, we put it in the cup of water and waited for about 5 minutes, then took the ball out of the moulder carefully and put it into a plastic bag and waited for it to dry.

The last thing we did was put a tablet into a lava lamp to see what would happen. Peter made the lava lamp, but we got to put the tablet in. When we put the tablet in it dissolved and made little bubbles which were carbon dioxide gas. The carbon dioxide gas pulled the water to the top with it but because the water was heavier or more dense it fell back down.  The oil was lighter in the lava lamp so it went to the top!

We are looking forward to learning more about chemical reactions in school in Science this term!

In Maths we have been learning about 2D shapes and 3D Objects. We discovered that we can describe 3D objects by identifying their edges, faces and vertices. The photos below show us having fun constructing different 3D objects such as pyramids, prisms and cubes.

Enjoy reading some of our reflections about our learning.

"I learnt that 3D objects are different to 2D shapes because 3D objects have 3 dimensions - length, width and height and 2D shapes are flat."  - Nate

"It was a really great experience putting different materials together to construct 3D objects." - Malia

"I loved using the plasticine and icypole sticks to make the 3D objects. I used the plasticine to join the sticks together and this showed me where the vertices were." -Ruby
