Toyota Industry Tour

On the 24th of August 2023, a group students went to the Toyota South Morang Dealership for an industry tour.

Student review of excursion:

When we arrived we were taken to have a look at the cars for sale in the outdoor showroom area. Looking at all the new cars was really interesting, especially because they had the new Land Cruiser and Land Cruiser Prado models. They also had a 2022 Hilux and some hybrid cars that were very interesting to explore. We were able to open the doors and get into the vehicles for a better look and experience.

Then, we met with two of the senior mechanics for a tour of the service areas. First they pointed out every one who worked in the workshop and what each of their roles were. There were people working on servicing cars, cleaning and detailing cars and also a diagnostics technician. There was an apprentice and a worker who specifically does the oil changes and filters.

After this, the mechanic took us to look at a damaged engine that Toyota was working on re-building. He quizzed us on what we could see was a problem with the engine and at first we thought that it was corroded with water, however it turned out a bolt had fallen into the 3rd piston and caused the piston to loose pressure and damage the area of the engine.

After this, the mechanic explained to process of changing the immobilizer system to be able to fit and use a new key for a previous stolen car.  He explained that you have to remove the entire dash, including all the wiring just to get to the required component. He then explained it can take over 6 months just to get a replacement single component to do the job, as they are shipped from Japan.

At the end of the tour we were given an opportunity to ask as many questions as we liked. People asked about things related to cars, but the best advice we got was about how to be a good apprentice. He said the important things to remember were to be on time, not be on your phone, have a good attitude, ask lots of questions and always be professional.

It was a really good experience to visit Toyota.
