Wellbeing

Olivia Zoch - Wellbeing Councellor

It has been a busy term within the wellbeing team at Peter Lalor, continuing to support our students with any social and emotional needs. To access one on one support from wellbeing, students can self-refer via COMPASS or staff can place a referral on behalf of them. If caregivers have concerns about their young person’s wellbeing, they are encouraged to contact the school and speak with their year level coordinator or our youth worker Olivia to ensure the young person can be checked in with and supported at school. A collaborative approach works best when supporting the wellbeing of young people so open communication from guardians is welcomed and encouraged!

At PLSC we emphasise the importance of self-awareness and have continued to build upon the help seeking skills within our students to not only connect with the wellbeing team within the school but to assist them with being linked with external organisations within the community as well.

  • YSAS - Youth Support and Advocacy Service - YSAS recognises adolescence as a time of rapid growth and development and, through a range of health and welfare services, enable young people and families to overcome problems associated with substance use, mental health and behaviours such as offending and self-harm.
  • Orange Door - free phone service that provides support for anyone with relationship or home environment issues with no referral required.
  • Headspace - provides mental health support to 12 - 25 year olds over the phone or online. With a focus on early intervention, Headspace works with young people to provide support at a crucial time in their lives – to help get them back on track and strengthen their ability to manage their mental health in the future.
  • ReachOut - offers a range of online support for young people aged 12–25, with a focus on supporting their mental health and wellbeing through everyday issues and tough times.
  • eSafety Commissioner - provides information and advice for kids and young people about how to keep safe online, what to do if something goes wrong and how to complain about online bullying or abuse.
  • Nurse on Call - puts you directly in touch with a registered nurse for caring, professional health advice around the clock.

Term 3 also saw us continue our ‘pride club’ on Tuesdays during lunch time. This has been an opportunity to build an inclusive environment within the school that allows any members of the LGBTQ+ community and allies to spend time talking and learning from each other.

Our Indigenous students have also been working hard designing and painting a mural that should hopefully be displayed at the college for the beginning of next term! This has been a great opportunity for them to be creative and highlights the amazing contributions that our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students make in our school.

In the final week of term, we will be celebrating ‘R U OK’ day as a school by encouraging check in conversations with one and other whilst enjoying some special treats baked by Russell and the year 10 students. This is an important day however we are working to build a culture at the school that fosters connection and encourages students and staff to check in with one another all year round.

At PLSC we try to support students and their families in any way we can. If there is anything going on for your family do not hesitate to get into contact with the wellbeing team at the college to discuss any assistance, we can offer. We look forward to continuing to provide our students with the skills and support they need to thrive!
