Year 10

This term Year 10 students have been attending Whittlesea Tech as part of the Entrepreneurship program.  The students were picked up from the school and made their own way home at the end of the session. The College has the start of the art technology with lots of resources and teaching expertise.

The types of activities our students have participated in so far include:

  • Graphic designing using latest Microsoft hardware and software,
  • Chocolate making using Thermomix equipment.
  • Creative packaging and label making for marketing chocolates.
  • Graphic design and jewellery making and laser cutting,
  • Exposure to range of software including Photoshop and Canva.
  • Graphic designing for logo creation. Students created from scratch or modified logos. They used these for their stickers and T-Shirt printing.
  • Creation of Podcasts in specifically designed rooms with the latest equipment.

Year 10 students also participated in the Cooking with Russell sessions. Each fortnight we join Russell in the hospitality room and create a meal or sweets from a different part of the world.  We have made kebab wraps, pancakes, cupcakes, butter chicken and lots of other yummy flavours.

Year 11

Throughout the term students were engaged and enthusiastic about several projects and events which were occurring this term. To begin the term students were given the opportunity to show off their planning and organisational skills by running activities with the rest of the college about topics they were passionate about. The highlights were a volleyball match to raise awareness for men’s mental health, soccer match to support the heart foundation and a basketball match to support men’s mental health.

In week 5, students went on an excursion to the city. This excursion was an amazing race around the city, where students needed to work together to find certain locations around the city based on several clues, which their classmates had developed. All students were responsible and participated with enthusiasm and excitement.

In week 6, students attended the Careers Expo at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. Students were able to explore potential career opportunities and gain an understanding of which trade field interested them.

In week 7, Students participated in a gambling incursion. This incursion educated students on the dangers of gambling and gave them an opportunity to understand how it can have such a negative impact on an individuals health and wellbeing. Students have had a successful term 3 and we look forward to celebrating the success of students in term 4.

Year 12

CAREERS EXPO:

On Thursday 17th August, students attended the Victorian Careers & Employment Expo which was paired with the World Skills National Championships. This excursion exposed students to professionals from a wide range of industries and provided them with opportunities to explore employment options, discover jobs of the future, talk with leading organisations about Training and Apprenticeship options and witness a range of hands-on skills being carried out. Students walked away with a breadth of knowledge around their employment interests, professional contacts for further training opportunities and a range of freebies, which is always a crowd favourite. It was great to see such high attendance for this event, as well as observing students walking around and taking in the opportunities available to them.

REAL INDUSTRY JOB INTERVIEWS (RIJI):

All year 12 students have been working hard in the Work Related Skills unit on updating and perfecting their resumes and cover letters to prepare them for their next journey. Students have been engaged in the RIJI process, where they are exploring employment options, preparing for job interviews, and putting together a portfolio of experience. In term 4, all students will participate in the Real Industry Job Interviews which is being facilitated by the Hume Whittlesea Local Learning & Employment Network. They will participate in mock interviews with industry professionals and receive valuable feedback on their submitted resumes and cover letters, as well as their interviews. Previously, students from PLSC have been offered employment following their involvement in the RIJI, so this is something that students are highly encouraged to apply themselves to. More information about the event will be provided next term.

COMMUNITY PROJECTS:

Across the term, students in 12A have been working hard to complete their Personal Development Skills Unit projects. The group focusing on homelessness as their topic have received an amazing amount of support from the PLSC and wider community, with a wide range of items being collected from donations. Students have put together an awareness raising campaign and have sought out an organisation to offer the donations to. In addition to this, students are actively organising a volunteer session at a community café to provide food to individuals in need. They have all also participated in a youth homelessness information session and tour, facilitated by Frontyard Youth Services. The other group has strengthened the schools’ relationship with the community garden, and they have worked hard prepared plots for planting vegetables and herbs. They envision passing this knowledge onto the younger year levels to take ownership of once they have completed their studies.

OVERALL:

Students have been working hard to complete the final component of their educational journey at PLSC. Many students have ensured they attend catch up sessions being held by staff to ensure they have extra time to complete outstanding work. All students need to continue communicating with their subject teachers to ensure they know what work is to be completed still, and to provide them with the best opportunity to complete all work by the due date. Attendance, commitment and engagement is of the utmost importance for this time of year, and there’s multiple supports and strategies in place to assist students to succeed, whether this be from their classroom teachers, Careers team or Wellbeing team. Ultimately, the choice is yours now. Let’s do this and celebrate together at Graduation!
