Speaking to your Child about Death and Grief

When a loved or important person has died, take the time to explain this to your child as soon as you can. If your child finds out by accident, or from someone they aren’t close to, your child might be confused and angry.

If you have more than one child in your family, you might talk with the children together or separately. Thinking about how old your children are, as well as their different temperaments, can help you work out what’s best.

It can also help to have the support of another adult when you talk with your children about death. You could ask your partner, if you have one, or a friend or family member who’s close to the children to be with you when you talk to them.
