INQUIRY

In Term 3, our students will be diving into the captivating topic of "How do cultures change a community?" This exploration will provide a deeper understanding of the dynamic relationship between culture and community, while fostering essential inquiry skills.
Throughout the term, our students will embark on a journey of self-discovery by exploring their family history, culture, and local connections. By delving into their roots, they will gain a richer understanding of their own cultural heritage and its contribution to our diverse community. Furthermore, they will explore the history of various cultures within our community.
The inquiry will be guided by key questions that encourage critical thinking and reflection. Students will explore why communities change, identify aspects that have withstood the test of time, analyse how our community has transformed over the years, and examine the impact of community on culture.
Throughout this exploration, students will develop and enhance their language skills. They will gain a comprehensive understanding of what culture entails and learn to articulate the influence and impact of culture on our community. In addition, they will sharpen their inquiry skills by understanding the nuanced meanings of intervals, fostering curiosity, and honing their abilities to ask insightful questions. Students will also develop research skills, utilizing various sources of information to deepen their knowledge of the community and acquire the language necessary to effectively express their findings.
To support your child’s learning at home, you could:
- Be Curious and Open-Minded: Approach conversations with genuine curiosity and an open mind. Encourage your child to share their thoughts, stories, and experiences. Ask open-ended questions that prompt further discussion and exploration. Create a safe and non-judgmental environment where your child feels comfortable expressing their ideas and asking questions.
- Share Personal Stories and Anecdotes: Draw from your own experiences and family history to share personal stories and anecdotes with your child. These stories can provide valuable insights and connections to the topic of inquiry. Sharing your own experiences also helps your child develop a sense of identity, understanding their place within the context of family, community, and culture.
- Support their Curiosity and Research: Encourage your child's curiosity by supporting their research efforts. Help them find age-appropriate resources, such as books, websites, or documentaries, that align with their inquiry topic. Encourage them to explore and gather information and provide guidance on how to navigate and evaluate sources for credibility and relevance.
