Dear Parents and Carers

It has been a wonderful start to the 2020 school year. Our preps are settling in and being well supported by the student community.

At our last assembly, we announced our 2020 school captains. Our school captains are:

Jaques D, Alicia M, James E and Lucy D. We look forward to working with them to ensure we have an active student voice present in our school.

SAFER INTERNET DAY

Tuesday 11th February was Safer Internet Day. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness about online safety and encourages everyone to help create a better internet. It is also a reminder that we need to be aware of how our children are using the internet, how we can support them to be safe online and how we respond when things go wrong.

Clifton Hill Primary Scool is an eSmart school and we are committed to educating our students about how to use the internet safely. We also need parents to support the work we do in the school setting.

ANAPHYLAXIS

We have a number of students at our school who are at risk of anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is a severe, rapidly progressive allergic reaction that is potentially life-threatening. The most common allergens in school-aged children are peanuts, eggs, tree nuts (cashews), cow’s milk, fish and shellfish, wheat, soy, sesame, latex and certain insect stings. Although allergic reactions are common in children, severe life-threatening reactions are uncommon and deaths are rare. However, deaths have occurred and anaphylaxis must therefore be regarded as a medical emergency.

The majority of students at risk of anaphylaxis at our school are allergic to nuts. We therefore ask our families to consider the safety needs of children at risk of anaphylactic reaction before sending their child to school with nut products such as;

- Raw or cooked nuts of any type (peanuts, almonds, cashews, pistachios, macadamia nuts, etc.)

- Nut spreads of any type (e.g. peanut butter, Nutella, etc.)

- Products which contain nuts and are labelled as containing nuts (e.g. chocolate bars with nuts, stir fry lunches with nuts, almond cakes, etc.)

We appreciate your understanding and hope you will support the children who are affected by this condition. The children dealing with these allergies will feel supported knowing that other children are not bringing in particular, peanut and other nut-based spreads and products to school.

We also recommend that our families are aware of how to administer an epi-pen in the event a child or adult suffers an anaphylactic reaction. The following link has a brief video showing how to administer an epi-pen. This link is suitable to show your children.
