Year 9 Textiles
Textiles at Year 9 and 10 is one of the Design & Technologies subjects offered at St. Peter’s College. Like all Design & Technology subjects, Textiles is a ‘skills for life’ subject, where students use the Design Process to ‘problem-solve’ varied solutions to a task. This encourages creativity, problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration and communication.
These skills are highly sought after attributes employers are looking for in their employees in today’s diverse job market. There is a growing and respected Textiles Design industry and the skills learnt in Textiles provide students direction to this career path as well as developing those attributes that appeal to practically every employer.
Year 9 Textiles students have begun the semester with a brief on creating a material alternative to the plastic bag. Using the Design Process, students had an open choice of the type of fabric they used and had to consider the following questions:
What material is suitable for construction? What does the Bag need to hold? Does the bag need to be waterproof? What size does the bag need to be? When will the bag be used? How long does the bag need to last? Does the bag need to stand up? How will the bag be carried?
Students of Design & Technologies subjects such as Textiles not only create something with a practical application they experience personal satisfaction and professional growth.
