Year 10 Photo and Media Article for the Newsletter
This semester the year 10 Photo and Media students will be working on a number of projects. Some of the tasks that they have already undertaken include analysing, interpreting and taking various photos. The first task required them to analyse a number of photographs and interpret them. Once, they were able to do so they went on to take their own photos using a number of techniques such as the basic styles of photography (portrait, landscape and documentary), lighting, rule of thirds, simplicity, contrast, proximity and point of view.
For the theory side of the subject students were introduced to Gillian Wearing and her famous work ‘I’m desperate’. Through Wearing’s work students have made discoveries about human nature. For example how we might be feeling and how we show them through our expressions and body language could be completely contradicting. One such example is her famous photograph of a person in a suit who appears to be calm and happy but the placard that he is holding suggests that he is desperate. Students were given a chance to recreate this by writing on a piece of paper how they were feeling and showing opposite emotions through facial expressions and body language.
Students are currently working on codes and conventions which requires them to analyse a scene from a film exploring techniques such as camera work, acting, mise en scene, lighting, editing and sound. This will help them in their next project where they will be planning, storyboarding, scripting and filming their own short films. The theme for this year’s film is ‘silent movie’.
Following are some of the photographs of the students in Year 10 Photo and Media.
